He madefour trips across the plains and back. The first time he left his wife and small children at home, onMay 6, 1850, during the "forty-niners" rush to California, he trecked on to the gold fields. He arrivedback home on Dec. 24, 1852, bring large amounts of gold with him. On one of these trips hebecame acquainted with James Bridger, the famous frontiersman.
