Thetwo key principles that underlie the Act —public access to information and protection ofpersonal privacy — are principles that Westernhad taken seriously for many years prior to theapplication of FIPPA.In 1996 the Board of Governors approvedThe University of Western Ontario Guidelineson Access to Information and Protectionof Privacy. The principles upon which theGuidelines are based include the following: asa general rule, with the exception of personalinformation, information contained in Universityrecords should be available to members of theUniversity community and to members of thepublic more generally; exemptions from thegeneral principle favouring access should be aslimited and specific as possible; and collection, retention, use, and disclosure of personalinformation contained in University recordsshould be regulated in a manner that will protectthe privacy of individuals who are the subject ofsuch information.Currently, Western endeavours to provideboth the University community and the publicwith broad access to its records. It continues itsefforts to protect the personal information ofall individuals who come into contact with theUniversity, be they students, alumni, faculty, staff, or members of the general public. Thegoal has been to ensure that all information isdealt with appropriately, whether in accordancewith University policies or legislation. Thelatter includes, for example, requirementslaid out in the Freedom of Information andProtection of Privacy Act and in the federalPersonal Information Protection and ElectronicDocuments Act (PIPEDA), to the extent that thelatter Act is applicable to the University.Western has established an Informationand Privacy Office located in the UniversitySecretariat and appointed an Information andPrivacy Coordinator. This Office is responsiblefor the day-to-day administration of FIPPA andother related legislation. An Advisory Committeehas been formed to assist the Coordinator withthe task of implementation. Members of theCommittee are: Director of the Information andPrivacy Office; University Secretary; UniversityArchivist; University Legal Counsel; Director ofInternal Audit; Student Central Team Leader,Office of the Registrar; Legal Manager; ResearchDevelopment Services and Director; InformationTechnology Services.SERT: StudentEmergency ResponseTeam, USCPhone: 519-661-2111 ext. 84824www.sert.uwo.caGeneral Inquiries: shs-ert@uwo.caFirst Aid Courses: sert-firstaid@uwo.caRoom 28, UCC (Inside Student Health Services)SERT is much more than a Universityclub.
