COMMERCIAL MESSAGESBecause we do not charge for <strong>Special</strong> <strong>Olympics</strong> participation,we must seek donations to cover many of the costs associatedwith events. Much of this money comes from businesses andcorporations. In return for their sponsorship, corporations orbusinesses may be given advertising at the event.Advertising may be in the form of signs, banners or T-shirts forvolunteers. <strong>Special</strong> <strong>Olympics</strong> cannot allow any form of advertisingor commercial message on the competition uniform of the athlete.This is a rule of the International Olympic Committee, <strong>Special</strong><strong>Olympics</strong>, Inc. and <strong>Special</strong> <strong>Olympics</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>Jersey</strong>.The following rules shall be followed at all <strong>Special</strong> <strong>Olympics</strong>competitions:v Volunteers may wear jackets, T-shirts, caps and other apparelbearing small and attractively designed identifications ofcorporate and organizational sponsors at sports venues.v Athletes not in competition and not at sports venues (e.g.,at training sessions, practices, trips or away from competitionsites) may wear apparel bearing small and attractively designedidentifications of corporate or organizational sponsors.v Athletes may carry and use non-apparel, non-sports equipmentitems, such as tote bags, bearing small and attractively designedidentifications of corporate or organizational sponsors.v Opening and Closing Ceremonies are deemed to have thesame status as sports venues during the Games. Hence,team or delegation members and officials shall not wear warmup suits, jackets, caps, etc. which bear corporate or organizationalidentifications which might be considered as advertising.22<strong>Sports</strong> <strong>Information</strong> <strong>Handbook</strong> 2013-2014
