Rigidity of verticaltravel improved forfaster feed ratesMulti-axisNo. 2008Idea bulletinHigh speed dual spindlemulti-axis boring machineApplicationAn American motorcyclemanufacturer was gearing upfor increased production oftheir large touring motorcycles.Operations required on thisdual spindle multi-axis boringmachine were center drill andspot face for the first spindleand 1-1/2” boring operationsfor the second spindle. Thematerial being worked wasTimken cast iron.ChallengeBecause the existing 10-yearolddual spindle drilling andboring machine could not keepup with required productionrates, the manufacturer decidedto replace it.Among the highest prioritiesfor the replacement machinewas a design with morevertical rigidity to allow forfaster feed rates and shortercycle times.SolutionCustom designed boring machine withmore vertical rigidity to allow for fasterfeed rates and shorter cycle times.Through a joint developmentprocess including themanufacturer, the machine toolbuilder and Gilman USA, a unitwas designed that met all ofthe end-use requirements.
