How does<strong>NSW</strong> compare?Not surpris<strong>in</strong>gly, s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>NSW</strong>makes up a third of the Australianpopulation, <strong>NSW</strong> women’sstatus and experiences are verysimilar to those of Australianwomen more widely.Indicators of their health status areslightly better <strong>in</strong> some areas, suchas report<strong>in</strong>g high or very high levelsof psychological stress and be<strong>in</strong>goverweight or obese. In education,<strong>NSW</strong> women have slightly highereducation rates than the Australianaverage, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g participation <strong>in</strong>work-related learn<strong>in</strong>g for people <strong>in</strong>the workforce.It is perhaps <strong>in</strong> the area of work andf<strong>in</strong>ancial security that the greatestdifferences between <strong>NSW</strong> womenand Australian women as a wholeare evident.<strong>NSW</strong> women have lower overalllabour force participation rates(perhaps related to their highereducational participation notedabove), but slightly higher rates ofpay once they are <strong>in</strong> employment.<strong>The</strong>re are more <strong>NSW</strong> women whohave no superannuation coverage.In terms of women’s leadership,<strong>NSW</strong> women do better <strong>in</strong> theirrepresentation levels on governmentboards and committees, and<strong>in</strong> the judiciary, but are lesslikely to be <strong>in</strong> the public sectorSenior Executive Service.<strong>NSW</strong> women are slightly less likelyto have experienced domesticviolence <strong>in</strong> the last 12 months;although as with the other<strong>in</strong>dicators, the differences are small.<strong>Women</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>NSW</strong> 2013 will beable to provide a bigger rangeof comparisons us<strong>in</strong>g 2011Census data where the limitationsassociated with sample surveys donot apply.In terms of women’s leadership,<strong>NSW</strong> women do better <strong>in</strong> theirrepresentation levels on governmentboards and committees, and <strong>in</strong> thejudiciary, but are less likely to be <strong>in</strong> thepublic sector Senior Executive Service.WOMEN IN <strong>NSW</strong> <strong>2012</strong> | EXECUTIVE SUMMARYix
