Topic 3: Apprenticeships and traineeshipsApprenticeships and traineeshipsare distinctive among VET coursesin that people undertaking themare contracted to an employerfor an established period. Theyoften result in qualifications thatare considered to be the minimumrequirements for an occupation, andmay be specified in legislation orindustrial instruments. The numberof apprentices and trainees of bothsexes has been increasing in NSWin recent years. The indicatorsbelow look at the comparative rateof women and men commencingand completing apprenticeships andtraineeships (Indicator 3.1), and thenin more detail at traditional tradeapprenticeships (Indicator 3.2).3.1 Apprenticeships and traineeshipsApprenticeship and traineeship commencements and completionsCurrent positionThe direction of changeover timeDiscussion41,600 women in NSW commenced an apprenticeship or traineeship in the12 months to September 2011, compared with 51,000 men.Roughly 23,500 women and 29,800 men completed an apprenticeship ortraineeship in NSW in the same period.Gender gaps:• Almost 9,400 fewer women than men commenced apprenticeships andtraineeships in NSW in 2011. This is equal to a 10 percentage point gapbetween men and women or a ratio of 4 women to every 5 men.• Almost 6,400 fewer women than men completed an apprenticeship ortraineeship in NSW in the year to September 2011. This is equal to a 12percentage point gap between men and women or a ratio of 7 women toevery 9 men.The ratio of women to men undertaking apprenticeships and traineeshipshas been closing gradually since 1995 (see Figure 3.6). The ratio of womencommencing an apprenticeship or traineeship has increased from 27 percentin 1995 to 45 percent in 2011.Note that the numerical gap, as shown in Figure 3.7, has remained relativelyconstant at around 6,500 more men than women.Significantly more women than men undertake non-trade apprenticeshipsor traineeships.
