4.2 Postgraduate studentsPostgraduate students in higher educationCurrent position In 2010, women made up 56 percent of NSW postgraduate students (37,456).Men made up 44 percent (29,110) of postgraduate students.Gender gap:• 8,346 more NSW women than men commenced a postgraduate highereducation course in 2010, a 13 percentage point gap in women’s favour.The direction of changeover timeDiscussionThe number of women studying postgraduate degrees has increased by25 percent since 2006 (data not shown). In contrast, the number of menstudying postgraduate degrees has increased by 14 percent since 2006.During this time, the ratio of women to men commencing postgraduate degreeshas increased slightly from 1.17:1 to 1.29:1.The growth in female postgraduate enrolments occurred most rapidly amongwomen enrolling in Masters degrees (see Figure 3.9).Figure 3.10 indicates that women in regional areas of NSW are underrepresentedamong postgraduate enrolments compared to their populationshare.
