Data sources<strong>The</strong> report seeks to br<strong>in</strong>g a rangeof <strong>in</strong>formation together <strong>in</strong> an easyto-useformat. It draws on:• published and unpublishedlarge-scale survey datafrom the Australian Bureauof Statistics (ABS)• data from national specialistsurveys, <strong>in</strong> particular theHousehold Income and LabourDynamics Australia (HILDA)longitud<strong>in</strong>al survey• government adm<strong>in</strong>istrativedata that is associated with aspecific program (for example,the Higher School Certificate,workers’ compensation orCommonwealth Rent Assistance)• <strong>NSW</strong> Government survey datathat is published, but maynot be well-known to a broadaudience (for example, the <strong>NSW</strong>Population Health Survey).While adm<strong>in</strong>istrative dataassociated with service use shouldnot be taken to be representativeof a problem or issue, it can shedlight on important topics. Wherepossible, data from differentsources are presented to providethe reader with a balanced picture.This choice is consistent with the<strong>NSW</strong> Government’s commitmentto honest, transparent andaccountable government asdescribed <strong>in</strong> Goal 31 of<strong>NSW</strong> <strong>2012</strong>, the State Plan.Census 2011 data will be used <strong>in</strong>subsequent reports and one-offresearch studies by <strong>Women</strong> <strong>NSW</strong><strong>in</strong> the future. As data becomesprogressively available from mid-<strong>2012</strong>, it will be possible to offermore analysis about subgroupsof women and to track changesbetween census periods.Us<strong>in</strong>g this reportThis first basel<strong>in</strong>e report willbe used <strong>in</strong> consultations withagencies, peak organisationsand other external stakeholders.It will also be of use to those<strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> policy developmentand advocacy more generally.<strong>Women</strong> <strong>NSW</strong> will also identifyissues for the <strong>NSW</strong> Government’sdata development agenda whereadditional sex-disaggregated datamay be needed.It is expected that new dataavailability and user feedback fromthe <strong>2012</strong> report will contribute tothe development of the second<strong>Women</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>NSW</strong> report <strong>in</strong> 2013.WOMEN IN <strong>NSW</strong> <strong>2012</strong> | INTRODUCTION3
