Operating under the Institute of Shortenings andEdible Oils (Washington DC), <strong>IOI</strong> <strong>Group</strong> was theinitiator of an important working group which worksto advance sustainability efforts in North America forSoy, Palm and Canola (Rapeseed) oils. This group,which began its efforts in March 2009, is known asthe Sustainable Agriculture Working <strong>Group</strong> and inaddition to <strong>IOI</strong> <strong>Group</strong> as Chair, comprises agriculturalheavyweights such as Cargill, Bunge and ADM.One of the ways for a company to define CSR foritself is through engagement with its stakeholders.<strong>IOI</strong> <strong>Group</strong> realised the importance of stakeholderengagement and has become involved in a varietyof initiatives, direct meetings with clients and NGOgroups to obtain the most honest and reliableinformation. It is through this type of co-operationand dialogue that <strong>IOI</strong> may learn of new and betterways to enable a successful and sustainable businessmodel.COMMUNITYBesides embracing sustainability and good businesspractices, <strong>IOI</strong> <strong>Group</strong> also strives to improve the localcommunity’s growth and well-being with greateremphasis on education and human capitaldevelopment.With this in mind, the Yayasan Tan Sri Lee ShinCheng (“Yayasan TSLSC”), a charitable foundationwholly-funded by <strong>IOI</strong> <strong>Group</strong>, was established in1994. Since then, Yayasan TSLSC has contributedmillions of ringgit to various schools, hospitals,welfare homes and charitable bodies and has givenscholarships and grants to a few hundred schoolsand university students.The following are some of its signature programmes:a) Student Adoption ProgrammeThe Student Adoption Programme (“SAP”) waslaunched in 2008 by the Deputy Minister ofEducation YB Dr Wee Ka Siong to provideunderprivileged children with equal access to agood basic education as a platform to abrighter future. The adopted students willreceive financial assistance and school bagsfrom Yayasan TSLSC until he or she completesprimary or secondary education. Since itsinception, the programme has benefited morethan 721 students from more than 196 schoolsin Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah.b) School Adoption ProgrammeThe School Adoption Programme was launchedin 2007 to create a conducive learningenvironment for students from deprivedschools in the rural areas. Financial assistance isgiven to these adopted schools to upgradetheir facilities such as building new classrooms,new halls, libraries, perimeter fences, IT andsports facilities in order to improve thestudents’ learning environment. To date, sixadopted primary and secondary schools in ornear <strong>IOI</strong> <strong>Group</strong>’s oil palm estates in Sabah havebeen adopted under this scheme.
