The Wright brothers are deservedly famous in aviation history. By comparison, the first developers of UMA (e.g., René Lorin of France, Professor A.M. Low of Great Britain, Lawrence Sperry and Charles F. Kettering of theUnited States) are virtually unknown by even those in the airpower profession.10 All these early pioneers experimented with military applications, andtheir first concepts of UAVs were as expendable “flying bombs.” Still, it is remarkablehow quickly after the “dawn of aviation” at Kitty Hawk in 1903 thatunmanned as well as manned airpower evolved for use in war.Prior to World War I—and even before the required technology fully existed—Lorin,a French artillery officer, first proposed the concept of flyingbombs to attack distant targets. 11 In Germany, experiments on guidedaerial vehicles began in 1915 and included launches from airships. In theUnited Kingdom, experiments beginning in 1917 produced UMA withnewly designed, expendable engines. 12Table 2Significant Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Events1917 FIRST UNMANNED “FLYING BOMBS” DEVELOPEDTHE “DAWN” OF UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLES1928 FIRST RADIO-CONTROLLED AIRCRAFT DEVELOPEDTHE BEGINNING OF REMOTELY PILOTED AERIAL VEHICLES1933 BRITISH DEMONSTRATE UNMANNED AIRCRAFT SURVIVABILITYALSO DEMONSTRATE VULNERABILITY OF NAVAL SHIPS TO AERIAL ATTACK1935 FIRST MINIATURE, REMOTELY PILOTED AIRCRAFTDESIGN NOT CONSTRAINED TO ACCOMMODATE PILOT1939 FIRST JET-PROPELLED UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLEGERMANY DEVELOPS V-1 BUZZ BOMB PROTOTYPE1941 FIRST VIDEO GUIDANCE CAPABILITY DEVELOPEDRESEARCH SPANS ACROSS ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM1944–45 FIRST OPERATIONAL USE OF JET-PROPELLED UNMANNEDAERIAL VEHICLE IN WAR; FIRST STRATEGIC TERROR WEAPONGERMANY LAUNCHES 10,500 V-1S AGAINST ENGLAND1951 US DEVELOPS FIRST JET-ENGINE TARGET DRONE“FIREBEE”WILL REPRESENT BASIC MODEL FOR DECADES1960 GARY POWERS SHOT DOWN IN U-2 OVER RUSSIAUS FOCUSES ON RECONNAISSANCE ROLE1964–73 US USES UNMANNED AIRCRAFT IN SOUTHEAST ASIAFIRST SUCCESSFUL AMERICAN USE1973 ISRAEL USES UNMANNED AIRCRAFT IN YOM KIPPUR WARFIRST SUCCESSFUL ISRAELI USE1976 SAC TRANSFERS CONTROL TO TACSUPPORT FOR UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLES WANES1982 ISRAEL USES UNMANNED AIRCRAFT IN BEKÁA VALLEYSECOND SUCCESSFUL ISRAELI USE1990 US USES UNMANNED AIRCRAFT IN DESERT STORMSECOND SUCCESSFUL AMERICAN USE1995 US AIR FORCE ESTABLISHES UAV SQUADRONFIRST SUCH AIR FORCE UNIT SINCE 197611
