2.64 per cent per annum) and to 23.52 millionin 2001 (2.45 per cent per annum) (Table 4.15).The increase in the total work participation rateoccurred largely because of the increase in femalework participation.Work participation rates by socialgroupsThe 2001 census provides data on SC and STworkers by broad category of activities. Accordingto available data, 16.85 per cent of the totalworkers (main + marginal) are SCs and 7.27per cent are STs. A category-wise comparisonshows that out of total cultivators, SCs constitutenearly 12 per cent and STs 7.6 per cent. Theproportion of SC agricultural labourers is about 28per cent and that of STs, about 12 per cent (Table4.16). This indicates that SC and ST workers arefound predominantly in the agrarian sector wherethey cluster in low-end jobs.Women’s work participation rateA comparison of work participation by women(both general and among SCs and STs) showsthat participation among SC and ST women,at about 41 per cent, is higher than women’swork participation for all groups (35 per cent). However, the composition of women workersacross different economic activities reveals moreor less similar trends for both SCs, STs and allgroups. Out of total cultivators, the proportionof women workers is about 30 per cent. SCand ST women as a proportion of SC and STcultivators exhibit the same pattern. About 55to 60 per cent of total agricultural labourers arewomen, both for all groups and SCs/STs, andamong those engaged in household industries, about 60 per cent are women. Women’s workparticipation is high in activities relating toagro-based manual work and householdindustrial activities requiring low skills. Theproportion of SCs and STs in the total ‘otherworkers’, which includes high-end jobs of thetertiary sector and manufacturing sector, is 14.0and 4.0 per cent respectively. The proportion ofwomen as a proportion of the total number ofSC and ST workers is about 28 per cent, whichis signifi cantly higher than women workersas a proportion of the total ‘other workers’(22 per cent). SC and ST women’s participationas a proportion of total SC and ST workers inthe ‘other workers category’ is also signifi cantlyhigher than the total women workers under thiscategory.Karnataka Human Development Report 2005The increase in the totalwork participation rateoccurred largely becauseof the increase in femalework participation.TABLE 4.16Category of workers by social groups: 2001Category of workers Number of workers SCs as STs asSCs STs Total % to Total % toTotal Women Total Women Total WomenTotal1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9CultivatorsAgricultural labourersWorkers in household industriesOther workers814788 242220 526827 152025 6883856 2051016 11.84 7.65(29.72) (28.85) (29.80)1737148 947259 738751 423346 6226942 3606015 27.90 11.86(54.53) (57.30) (57.90)100447 57831 45146 27003 959665 554574 10.47 4.70(57.57) (59.80) (58.80)1314062 373684 399296 110350 9464328 2087833 13.88 4.22(28.43) (27.64) (22.00)3966445 1620994 1710020 712724 23534791 8299438 16.85 7.27Total(40.86) (41.67) (35.26)Note: * Figures in parenthesis indicate percentage of respective totals.Source: Registrar General of India, Census of India 2001.87
