Kumgang and Nampo.Just to access some of these regions we willbe chartering an aircraft - this really is a oncein a lifetime experience into unknown pocketsof an unknown country.This group tour will be limited to 16participants and will be escorted by a ToursManager from Regent Holidays.Day 1 Fly to PyongyangFly to Pyongyang from Beijing. (D)Day 2 PyongyangEnjoy a full day touring Pyongyang. Visit theMansudae Fountain Park before <strong>as</strong>cendingMansu Hill to the Mansudae GrandMonument, the centrepiece of which is thespectacular 20 metre tall bronze statues ofKim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il. The group willbe expected to lay a wreath of flowers at thefoot of the statues before bowing in unisonbefore it. Visit the nearby Chollima Statue, thelegendary winged horse that w<strong>as</strong> adopted <strong>as</strong>the symbol for national movement for rapiddevelopment after the Korean War. Fromhere, visit the Grand People’s Study House,the national library, which overlooks Kim IlSung Square. After lunch, head out into theple<strong>as</strong>ant suburb of Mangyondae to visit thebirthplace of President Kim Il Sung. Returningto the city, visit a Middle School and hopefullysee a music and dance performance put on bythe students. (B,L,D)The Arirang M<strong>as</strong>s Games is scheduled to takeplace whilst we are in the country, and we havetentatively pencilled in the evening of day 2 toattend. Ple<strong>as</strong>e note that The M<strong>as</strong>s Games isprone to date changes and cancellations, socan never be 100% guaranteed. Tickets arenot included in the tour cost and are expectedto be €80 - €300 per person, depending on theseating cl<strong>as</strong>s required.Day 3 Pyongyang to KaesongVisit the USS Pueblo, an 850 ton US spy boatcaptured in 1968 by the Koreans off the co<strong>as</strong>tof Wonsan, before heading south to discoverthe Sariwon Folklore Village. After lunch, headfurther south along the Reunification Highwaytowards Kaesong, enjoying a detour to theattractive Pakyon Falls en route. On arrival inKaesong, check in to hotel for 2 nights. (B,L,D)Day 4 KaesongPay a visit to Sonjuk Bridge before heading toPanmunjom - the DMZ and border with SouthKorea. Meet with an army escort who willexplain the history of the DMZ, before movingon to the Armistice Talks Hall. From here,head to the border itself to be escorted (localconditions permitting and possibly under thewatchful eyes of South Korean soldiers) intoone of the huts which straddle the North-South Korean border.After lunch, visit the Koryo History Museum,before heading for a viewing platform on thenorth side of the DMZ to look at the ConcreteWall or “Wall of Division.”A senior-army guidewill here likely explain the history of the walland border tensions. Return to Kaesong withtime to visit Janamsan Park en route. (B,L,D)Day 5 Kaesong to PyongyangTravel back to Pyongyang, stopping enroute at one of the best preserved tombsin the DPRK, The Tomb of King Kongmin.Arriving back in the capital, visit the JucheTower, symbol of the Juche Idea (nationalself reliance, literally “M<strong>as</strong>ter of one’s self”)penned by Kim Il Sung. From here also visitthe centrally located Monument to theFoundation of the Workers Party of Koreaand the f<strong>as</strong>cinating Fatherland Liberation WarMuseum. This very large museum dedicated tothe dev<strong>as</strong>tating war h<strong>as</strong> some truly f<strong>as</strong>cinatingdisplays and exhibits. Check back into hotelfor 2 night stay. (B,L,D)Day 6 PyongyangVisit the awesome Kumsusan MemorialPalace, the former residence of Kim Il Sung,and now the Mausoleum of both Kim Il Sungand Kim Jong Il. The Mausoleum itself isfollowed by exhibits showc<strong>as</strong>ing medals ofhonour bestowed upon the President anda monument to the mourning of the nationafter his death in 1994. (Ple<strong>as</strong>e note that themausoleum is closed and expected to reopenin April 2013.) Moving on, visit the nearbyRevolutionary Martyrs’ Cemetery, hometo the graves of more than 200 of Korea’sleading resistance figures . After lunch, headto the Pyongyang Grand Theatre, and take awalk along the main boulevard to Kim Il SungSquare, the heart of the nation which regularlyhosts military parades and m<strong>as</strong>s events. Thesquare is lined with important buildings andmuseums. Take time for some people watchingin Moranbong Park before dinner back at thehotel. (B,L,D)Day 7 Pyongyang to SamjiyonDepart the city for nine nights in the wildsof North Korea. Transfer to the airport andboard our chartered Antonov 24 aircraftfor the flight north to Samjiyon, This borderregion is home to Mt. Paekdu – a peak of greatspiritual symbolism to the Korean people,enhanced by the fact that it w<strong>as</strong> the homeof the Korean People’s Army during the waragainst the Japanese. Arriving in Mt. Paekdu,visit the impressive and beautifully locatedSamjiyon Grand Monument at Lake Samji.From here, carry on to Daehongdan Countyfor an insight into life in this extreme northerncorner of the country, visiting farmers’ fields,the local village, county town and a potatoprocessing plant.
