On this tour, you can learn about thehistory of the construction of St Petersburgby visiting Nevsky Prospekt, the Admiralty, theSummer Garden, the buildings of MariinskyTheatre and transformer bridges across theNeva River. We also include a stop at thePeter and Paul Fortress, founded in 1703 todefend St Petersburg against enemy raids.This complex includes the Peter and PaulCathedral, the original house of Peter theGreat, the Royal Mint and other buildings.Rest of day free to explore at leisure. (B)Day 3 The HermitageMorning visit to the State Hermitage Museum(3 hours), one of the world’s greatestmuseums, founded in 1764 and occupyingthe buildings of the Winter Palace and Small,Old and New Hermitages. The museum’scollection now h<strong>as</strong> more than three millionitems – paintings, graphic art and sculptures.After the tour ends, you can stay in themuseum to enjoy the exhibits at your ownpace, <strong>as</strong> they do say to see all exhibits youwould need to walk twenty four miles! (B)Day 4 PetrodvoretsToday’s tour (5 hours) visits Petrodvorets,otherwise known <strong>as</strong> Peterhof which is perhapsSt Petersburg’s most famous and spectacularImperial Estate. The Grand Palace, filled withf<strong>as</strong>cinating and elaborate interiors, sits ontop of a high se<strong>as</strong>hore ridge overlooking thev<strong>as</strong>t Lower Park. The palace is surrounded byan enormous park, adorned with fountains,statues and pavilions. (Add £20 per personsupplement if you wish to travel one-way byhydrofoil during the summer). (B)Day 5 The Palaces of Tsarskoye Selo& PavlovskThis f<strong>as</strong>cinating tour (6 hours) visits thetown of Pushkin, also known <strong>as</strong> TsarskoyeSelo and is located 30 kilometres south ofSt Petersburg. Here, you visit the impressivepalaces of Catherine and Pavlovsk. Pavlovsk,the former summer residence of the RussianTsars, w<strong>as</strong> built in cl<strong>as</strong>sic style by the architectCameron. Around the palace is a romantic parkwith mysterious rivers, pavilions, grottoes andancient statues. One of the highlights is <strong>as</strong>top at the magnificent Baroque Catherine’sPalace, where the Amber Room is consideredto be one of the Wonders of the World.
