Day 15 Wonsan to PyongyangDrive back to Pyongyang, stopping enroute for a brief rest at the Sinphyong TeaHouse. On arrival back in the capital, headunderground for an extended ride on themost impressive Pyongyang Metro. Surfacingnear the Arch of Triumph, move on to theStamp Shop before visiting the centralPyongyang Schoolchildren’s Palace, one oftwo complexes in Pyongyang that caters tothe after school activities of Pyongyang’s mostgifted youth. Tour the facilities before seeinga performance put on by the students. Fromhere, head to Korea’s E<strong>as</strong>t co<strong>as</strong>t and on to theport city of Nampo to check into the hotel foran overnight stay. (B,L,D)Day 16 PyongyangDay 8 SamjiyonHead to nearby Mt. Paekdu for a full day inthis stunning area. Go through the entryformalities (this is right beside the Chineseborder) before <strong>as</strong>cending to the crater rimof the mountain. From here, those who wishcan (time and weather permitting) carry on upto the highest point in the Korean Peninsula,Janggun Peak, at 2,750 metres in heightor head down the 2,160 steps to the shoreof Lake Chon. After a picnic lunch, visit thePaekdu Secret Camps, from where the Armyw<strong>as</strong> b<strong>as</strong>ed and Kim Il Sung headquarteredfrom 1936 to 1943. Return to the hotel viathe scenic Rimyongsu Falls. (B,L,D)Day 9 Samjiyon to ChongjinDepart Samjiyon by our Antonov 24 on a shortflight to Orang - essentially a military airport,where on previous Regent tours MiG fighterjets have been spotted. Head north alongthe attractive co<strong>as</strong>tal road to Chongjin, theadministrative capital of North HamgyongProvince. Chongjin is an industrial and portcity which receives extremely few foreignvisitors. Here, visit the main square and itsstatue of President Kim Il Sung, the ProvincialRevolutionary Museum and the SteelworksKindergarten, where we will hopefully enjoyan arts performance put on by the children.Visit the Foreign Sailors Club before checkinginto the hotel to overnight. (B,L,D)Day 10 Chongjin to HamhungDepart Chongjin for Orang Airport and <strong>as</strong>hort flight to Hamhung, North Korea’ssecond most populous city and a majorindustrial hub. Visit Donhung Hill andHamhung’s statue of President Kim Il Sung,Hamhung Bongung (the house where RiSong Gye, the founder king of the Ri dyn<strong>as</strong>tyresided), the Hungnam Fertiliser Factory andthe exterior of the Hamhung Grand Theatre.Return to the hotel to overnight. (B,L,D)Day 11 Hamhung to Mt KumgangDrive to Wonsan, visiting the Dongbong Co-Operative Farm en route. On arrival in the city,visit the Small Train Station Museum and theProvincial Art Gallery (state art shop) beforecontinuing the journey south to Mt. Kumgang.Time and weather permitting there is theoption to stop at Sijung Beach en route. Arrivein Mt. Kumgang and check into the hotel for a3 night stay. (B,L,D)Day 12 Mt KumgangMt. Kumgang had been off limits to touristsin North Korea for some years; thisspectacularly beautiful area only “opened”to visitors from the North in summer 2010.Enjoy an attractive walk up to the KuryongWaterfall, then visit the beautiful Samil Lake,where those who wish can take a short walk.Also visit the small “Tourist Shop” in whatis essentially the ghost town resort centredeveloped by Hyundai. (B,L,D)Day 13 Mt KumgangEnjoy a second full day in the stunningKumgang Mountains, starting with a walk toManmulsan, another beautiful route. Thosewho choose not to attempt the full 2 ½ - 3 hourtrail will still encounter beautiful mountainscenery after just a few minutes. After lunchenjoy some free time to relax at the hotel ornearby spa. (B,L,D)Day 14 Mt Kumgang to WonsanDrive back to Wonsan. Today is an importantnational holiday and various special eventsare expected to be taking place across thecountry. It is likely that m<strong>as</strong>s dancing willtake place in Wonsan city square and specialartistic performances and exhibitions will takeplace in the city – we will strive to see <strong>as</strong> much<strong>as</strong> is permitted in the afternoon. Full detailswill not be available until the day. (B,L,D)Head to the West Sea Barrage, a mostimpressive 8km long barrage built in the1980’s along the estuary of the TaedongRiver. From here visit some heavy industrialsites in Pyongyang (subject to reconfirmationlocally) before returning to Pyongyang to visitthe newly opened Pyongyang Folklore Parkand Folklore Museum on the outskirts of thecity. Check in to the hotel for the final nightin North Korea - those who wish can enjoy atrip to a Pyongyang funfair after the farewelldinner. (Payable locally).
