And yet,with initiatives in food, animal, plant, and biologicalsciences, CALS clearly illustrates the relevance ofagricultural research in creating a world that cansupport its inhabitants. Because of this diverse portfolio,CALS is regarded as the best college of its kindin the nation.For more than a century, CALS has advanced discoveryand led translation into sustainable innovation for thepublic good. The broad expertise and programmaticreach of the college center around four focal areas:Food & Energy Systems: With the world populationexpected to reach 9 billion by 2050, scientists at CALSare creating new means to strengthen and securefood and energy systems by developing innovativeand sustainable ways to feed a growing populace andits growing demand for energy. Integrated teams ofscientists are improving the nutritional quality,safety, and availability of the world’s food supply,while driving a compatible evolution of bioenergyproducts and systems.Life Sciences: Life-changing advancements start withinsights into fundamental life processes. From foundationalto translational research, CALS faculty, students,and staff strive to discover the essential natureof life and to apply this knowledge to solve globalproblems for the benefit of society. Researchers notonly pioneer breakthroughs ranging from molecularand cellular biology to human and animal health, butalso explore the ethical and social aspects of scientificdiscovery.Environmental Sciences: Home to the first departmentsof entomology and forestry in the United States, CALShas been shaping environmental science since its inception.From classroom to laboratory, field, forest,and watershed, CALS scientists enhance the understandingof issues regarding air, water, soil, and climateas they develop “greener” approaches toremediation and enhance the stewardship and sustainabilityof the world’s scarce resources.CALS continues to secure the future of its excellencein these four focal areas through strategic, targetedinvestments in places, programs, and people. Recentexamples include the ongoing $51 million WarrenHall renovation; CALS’ innovative new EnvironmentalScience and Sustainability major; and the college’sredoubled commitment to renewing its faculty.Through these and myriad other efforts, CALSstrives to fulfill its Land Grant mission of deliveringknowledge with a public purpose to the people of thestate, the nation, and the world at large.Economic and Community Vitality: Building economicand community vitality has been a priority of thecollege for more than a century, since the first deanof the college, Liberty Hyde Bailey, committed resourcesto strengthening the agricultural economyand rural communities in New York. Today, thatvision encompasses addressing how people communicate,interact, learn, lead, and shape organizationsand enterprises of all scales to improve the wellbeingof individuals, communities, and economiesaround the world.Architecture, Art, and <strong>Plan</strong>ningThe faculty of the College of Architecture, Art, and<strong>Plan</strong>ning (AAP) teach and practice architecture, finearts, city and regional planning, and real estate ascreative and powerful forces in a rapidly urbanizingworld. Students are prepared to address the complexproblems of the twenty-first century through the applicationof the art and science of design. The collegeis focused on building synergies among departmentsand courting partnerships with cognate units to advancea more coherent, design-centric identity.In FY13, the college made three tenure-track facultyappointments across two departments, providing an

Five additional searches distributedacross all three departments will bring additionalfaculty expertise to AAP for FY<strong>14</strong>.FY<strong>14</strong> marks the second year that the Baker Program inReal Estate has been operated jointly within the Schoolof Hotel Administration and AAP, and this programwill add faculty within City and Regional <strong>Plan</strong>ning.In FY<strong>14</strong>, AAP also expects to finalize the plan to renovatethe top two floors of Rand Hall for the full FineArts Library and complete the renovation of the thirdfloor of East Sibley Hall.Arts & SciencesThe College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) remainsdedicated to providing an undergraduate educationcharacterized by breadth and depth of study with thelatitude to shape an individualized curriculum. Wealso strive to prepare future leaders in intellectualdisciplines through high quality graduate education.Among faculty and students alike, we promote researchand artistic endeavors that advance ourunderstanding of the natural, physical, social, andcultural worlds. We offer 42 majors to 4,100 undergraduatestudents, and we mentor 1,500 studentspursuing graduate degrees.
