INTRODUCTIONThe Hon . Michael Atkinson, M .P ., Attorney-General, Minister for Justice andMinister for Multicultural Affairs, Ms Vini Ciccarello, Member for Norwood, andMr George Karzis, Ministerial Adviser to the Hon . Michael Atkinson M.P .,participated in a study tour of Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina(BiH) and Serbia and Montenegro (SiM) commencing on Sunday 1 August,2004, and concluding on Friday 20 August, 2004 .These recently created states comprise the most of the former Yugoslavia,which has provided many migrants to South Australia .Unlike most of the countries that contributed to the influx of migrants in thepost-World War II era, such as Italy, Greece and Malta, there has been muchrecent migration from this region to Australia and South Australia as a result ofthe break-up of the former Yugoslav Federation .The objective of the study tour was to :-0inform the participants of the progress in recovering from boththe wars and the communist dictatorship that preceded it ;" gain a greater understanding of the origins, culture, languageand beliefs of South Australian migrant communities ;" promote relationships between those expatriate communitiesand their homelands ;explore opportunities for South Australians in the rapidlydeveloping Balkan economies ;gain an understanding of developments in policing, legislativereform and the justice systems of the successor states ;" communicate to the expatriate communities in South Australiaand other interest groups the information gathered .All participants wish to express their appreciation for the efforts of theDepartment of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and, in particular, themissions in Zagreb, Belgrade and Vienna (who are responsible forrepresenting Australian interests in Slovenia and BiH) as well as theAustralian Honorary Consul in Slovenia .In particular, we would like to express our appreciation for the efforts of : theHonorary Consul in Slovenia, Mr Viktor Baraga, and his staffer, Ms NadaMarincek ; Her Excellency Anna George, the Australian Ambassador toCroatia ; the Embassy's First Secretary and Consul, Mr Kevin McDonald ;Mr Neno Bogdan, the Ambassador's driver ; Mr Paul Martin, who was engagedto drive us through Slovenia and Croatia and whose efforts and informativeTravel Report, Hon.
