He fought a long and courageous battle butleft this world to suffer nomore.Layton was born in Harnett County on September 12, 1915, to Claude T. and Eva StancilDuPree. He is survived by his long loving and faithful wife, Edna Stephenson DuPree whomhe married on April 9, 1941. They were true partners in love and faith.Four children were born to their union. two sons, Thomas Leonard "Tommy" preceded hisfather in death in 1988. His surviving children are his son, Charles Layton and wife, Sandra <strong>of</strong>Angier; two daughters,Nancy DuPree Canady and husband, Johnnie "Red" <strong>of</strong> Garner, Peggy DuPree Smith andhusband, Raeford "Ray" <strong>of</strong> Angier.He is survived by six grandchildren, Courtney Clifton Messer <strong>of</strong> Benson, Trinity DanielClifton <strong>of</strong> Willow Springs, Kent Smith <strong>of</strong> Wake Forest, Kevin Smith <strong>of</strong> Wilmington, Penny<strong>Dupree</strong> and Lynn DuPree Michie <strong>of</strong> Angier and two step grandchildren, Kasey Garrison <strong>of</strong>Angier, Christopher Garrison <strong>of</strong> Phil Campbell, Alabama.He was also blessed with three great-grandchildren, Melissa, Jennifer and Amanda Clifton;one stepgreat-grandchild, Kayla Messer.He was preceded in death by three brothers, Jack, Carlton and A.C. DuPree; one half-brother,Moses. He is survived by his beloved half-sister, Evelyn "Sis" Partin <strong>of</strong> Garner; numerousnieces, nephews, and loving friends.Layton graduated from Angier High School in 1934. He was a retired produce and livestockfarmer. Heserved his home and community as long as his health would permit. He was a lifetime member<strong>of</strong> theJohnston County Farm Bureau and served on the Johnston County ASC Committee for over35 years. He was the Johnston County Registrar for Voters in the Pleasant Grove Precinct for40 years. His most precious serving was to the Lord.He and Edna joined Sandy Grove Primitive Baptist Church on March 20, 1971. He was calledto serve as Deacon on September 19, 1971. He served on the Little River Primitive BaptistAssociation Finance Committee for over 20 years. He was the Clerk for Sandy Grove for over 25 years. He served withhumbleness and dignity and his family and all his loved ones rejoice to know he is now withhis Lord.Service will be held at Sandy Grove Primitive Baptist Church on Wednesday, January 12,2000 at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The stroke left her speechless for three weeks and permanentlyparalyzed on her right side. With help from her husband, she learned to walk and talk again.On April 9, 1941, she married T. Layton <strong>Dupree</strong>, a farmer.
