State Highway Patrolman, then served the Recorder's Court of Hoke County (Raeford) asjudge, and was the first District Court lay Judge elected to serve the 12th Judicial Districtserving Hoke and Cumberland Counties. He retired in l983 after serving 18 years as a judge.As a patrolman and judge, he was recognized as being compassionate, thorough, tough, andjust.Joe was a Mason and a Shriner. He was a Past Master of the Raeford Masonic Lodge. Heearned many Masonic Degrees including a Certificate of Past Commander and received theaward of Knight Mason, which was conferred by President Gerald Ford.He is survived by his wife, Helen Matthews Dupree; two daughters, Jean D. Ingram and herhusband, James Ingram of Oxford, Carolyn D. Davis and her husband, Harvey R. Davis ofRaleigh; one son, Joseph E. Dupree, Jr. and his wife, Teresa Coston Dupree of Alpharetta,GA; two grandsons, Joseph E. Dupree, III of Augusta, GA and John Thomas Dupree ofKnoxville, TN; sisters, Ellen Fleming and Joyce Hildebrand; and brothers, Curtis, Kenneth,and D. B. Dupree.A private memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2002. The Rev.
