02/04/2008Elder James S. Denning, 86, <strong>of</strong> 278 Railroad St., Coats, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008, at WakeMedical Center in Raleigh. He was born Oct. 10, 1921, in Johnston County to the late WillisE. and Bessie Stephenson Denning. He was a retired funeral director, having served with threelocal funeral homes - Rose & Graham Funeral Home, Coats Funeral Home and the formerOverby Funeral Home <strong>of</strong> Coats. He was the owner <strong>of</strong> Denning Flower Shop in Coats.Elder Denning was a veteran <strong>of</strong> the U.S. Army in World War II and fought in the EuropeanTheater and the Battle <strong>of</strong> the Bulge. He was a Bronze Star medal recipient. He was a member<strong>of</strong> Fellowship Primitive Baptist Church and served as pastor. He also served as pastor <strong>of</strong>Clement Primitive Baptist Church, Bethany Primitive Baptist Church and Sapony PrimitiveBaptist Church in Rocky Mount.Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rose & Graham Funeral Home Chapel inCoats by Elders R.L. Fish and Virgil Davis.
