28 duisport magazine June 2009 THE PORT 2008 financial year �� Despite a difficult economic environment, especially in the fourth quarter, container handling was increased to 1 million TEU. “The efficiency and attractiveness of the Port of Duisburg has contributed to this pleasing growth once again. Our growth rates in comparison with European sea and inland waterway ports have been at top levels for years,” according to Erich Staake, Chief Executive Officer of Duisburger Hafen AG. (duisport) The double digit growth in combined transport could almost fully compensate for declines in the coal and steel segments. In grand total the Port of Duisburg Group reached the level of the previous year at 54.5 million tonnes well as the Gateway West-Terminal in logport II. Through the new Eastern Approaches the logport site is now directly connected to the transport network on the right bank of the Rhine. The duisport Group is maintaining its planned investment measures, even in the current difficult economic environment, and is investing up to 140 m Euros in the upcoming years. The increases in growth were, however, eaten up by the collapse in the fourth quarter. “The very difficult economic situation will lead to declines in cargo handling in 2009,” according to Erich Staake. Successful large project at VTS The VTS Group, a subsidiary of the duisport-Group since the start of 2007, also completed numerous large projects in the 2008 financial year. Here it worked together with all large, internationally orientated mechanical engineering and plant constructors. More than 60 per cent is already in operation. Further extensions and new re-locations were also added last year, just as in the part of the port on the right bank of the Rhine. Staake also went 2008 financial year into detail about future projects, such as logport ruhr (see dM December 2008) and the associated “Good Luck Express” (see page 22) in his explanations. Due to the current worldwide financial and economic crisis declining figures for sales and results are expected in the 2009 financial year and also for 2010.
