4 duisport magazine June 2009 EVENTS transport logistic 2009 �� The 12th international specialist exhibition for logistics, telematics and transport once again broke records despite the economic crisis with more than 1,760 exhibitors (+11%) from 55 countries and 48,000 visitors from around the world, exceeding all expectations. The brightly lit duisport exhibition stand in the entrance area of Hall B 4 showed itself to be a logistical-maritime beacon at transport logistic 2009 from May 12 to 15. (Dü) Politicians also recognized the outstanding role of transport logistics as the leading trade fair for the global transport and logistics sector in tough times and gave exhibitors and visitors encouragement for the future. “The tremendous interest in this year’s transport logistic is a positive signal for the entire sector. A very clear impetus is coming from this event and this place – and that is just what we need," said German Transport Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee at the offi- cial opening of the exhibition. “My Ministry is doing everything it can to support the logistics sector with its 2.7 million employees throughout Germany. Together with the stimulus programs we are investing 12 billion Euros in 2009 and 2010 respectively in the transport infrastructure and combined transport, which is more than ever before. We are now preparing ourselves for the time after the crisis. Germany will also remain the Number 1 logistics location worldwide in photos: Fink the future.” The Dutch Transport Minister Camiel Eurlings concurred. “The expansion experienced by transport logistic is sending an important sign. It is giving us hope again in tough times.” Encouragement in tough times The exhibitors and visitors to transport logistic 2009 also shared this opinion. A survey conducted by tns Infratest showed that 70 per cent of the exhibiting companies and 58 per cent of the specialist visi-
tors expect an improvement in the economic situation in the coming two years. Michael Kubenz, President of Germany’s forwarding and logistics association, Deutscher Speditions- und Logistikverband (DSLV), and Chairman of the Advisory Board of transport logistic commented, “transport logistic 2009 is giving us real encouragement. It is sending valuable signals and providing impetus for the future of our industry.” Although companies are currently restricting travel by their employees, the exhibition nevertheless attracted around 48,000 visitors, which is slightly higher than the number in the logistics boom year of 2007. The exhibitors noted in particular the high quality of the company representatives and found that discussions with customers were more intensive than ever before, as well as producing an unexpectedly high number of specific enquiries. The fact that over one third of the visitors came from the forwarding industry and trade was rated positively by the exhibitors. duisport – a stable factor in the Rhine-Ruhr area “We have had significantly more discussions with decision makers than in previous years and, despite the crisis, the interest in logistics chains via the Port of transport logistic 2009 Duisburg has pleasantly increased. For this purpose the wide logistics range at our locations on the Lower Rhine and in the Ruhr region have proved themselves to be stabilizing factors in the current, somewhat harsh economic climate,” commented duisport Chief Executive Officer Erich Staake. Thus Staake and his team were able to have discussions about new combi-train connections with South and East European sea and inland waterway terminals. “Thanks to improved rail connections the importance of Italian seaports to European container traffic will grow in future. Therefore the duisport customer contact trip is going to the ports of Koper and Triest at the head of the Adriatic Sea at the end of August 2009. We want to strengthen contacts made at the exhibition here and present the multi-modal network and the numerous services of the Port of Duisburg and logistics locations together with out port neighbors,” said Staake. The duisport Executive Board members Markus Bangen and Thomas Schlipköther also used the high presence of international visitors to make new contacts. “The crisis is not only being used in Germany to prepare for future growth scenarios by investing in new infrastructure.
