At the beginning of January 2009, Duisburger Hafen AG was able to start operations at the so-called Gateway West-Terminal on
the logport II site in the south of Duisburg together with the Imperial subsidiary RRT.
(ag) When the duisport Group took over
the former MHD-Sudamin industrial site
at the beginning of 2006 it was clear that
there was a lot of work to be done. Since
then a total of around 60 million Euros
has been invested in order to transform
the heavily polluted former metalworks
into a modern, multi-modal cargo hand-
ling centre. “Operating a facility like this
on this site today is a lot of fun,” says Thomas
Waldmüller, Commercial Manager of
RRT and the manager in charge of the
Gateway-West Terminal. The Rhein Ruhr
Terminalgesellschaft für Container- und
Güterumschlag mbH (RRT) belongs to the
internationally active Imperial Logistics
Group.
Snow shovels before the start
Before the “fun” however, the duisport
team, including Waldmüller and his colleagues,
had to roll their sleeves up. At the
start of operations at the new container
terminal on January 5 snow shovels were
initially called for. “The onset of winter
covered the whole terminal in snow. In
order to be able to move the first boxes
sensibly we first had to shovel a few
spaces free of snow. We then handled the
first ship at minus 18°C,” laughs Wald-
müller. But since then the new terminal
has operated without problems. The division
of work between duisport and RRT is
clear. “duisport supplies and operates the
overhead gantries, we’re responsible for
the reach stackers and terminal staff,”
explained the terminal boss. The waterfront
public terminal area, which can be
used without discrimination by third parties,
is 35,000sq.m in size. This includes
the overhead gantries and four half rail
platforms, each 310m in length – the quay
is 350 meters long.
