■■❚❙❘Chapter 10Crossover <strong>Trials</strong>Duolao Wang, Ulrike Lorch, and Ameet BakhaiCrossover trials are designed so that each recruited patientreceives both active and control treatments in either orderfor a specified duration, with a ‘washout’ period betweentreatments when no treatment is administered. In such trials,patients act as their own controls, therefore fewer patientsare required to evaluate the effects of different therapiesthan in a trial with a parallel design. There are also limitationsto the crossover design, however, and here, in this chapter, wediscuss the advantages and disadvantages of crossover trials.91
