❘❙❚■ GlossaryHazard ratioIn survival analysis, the hazard (rate) represents an instantaneous event rate(incidence rate) at a certain time for an individual who has not experienced anevent at that time. A hazard ratio compares two hazards of having an eventbetween two groups. If the hazard ratio is 2.0, then the hazard of having an eventin one group is twice the hazard of having an event in the other group. Thecomputation of the hazard ratio assumes that the ratio is consistent over time(proportional hazards assumption).Hypothesis testing or significance testingA statistical procedure for assessing whether an observed treatment differencewas due to random error (chance) by calculating a P-value using the observedsample statistics such as mean, standard deviation, etc. The P-value is theprobability that the observed data or more extreme data would have occurredif the null hypothesis (ie, no true difference) were true.
