RADIO TELEFÍS ÉIREANNOperational ReviewRTÉ News and Current AffairsThe General ElectionThe biggest event of the year for RTÉNews and Current Affairs was the GeneralElection, which took place on Thursday 24May. Both the nationwide campaign leadingup to it and the coverage of the ElectionCount itself across Television, Radio, Onlineand Aertel were significant challenges.From the moment the Election was calledRTÉ News provided a range of specialextra programmes on Radio and Television.Campaign Daily, an innovative hour-longprogramme on Television was linked to thespecially created RTÉ Election website.Audience Research shows that theLeaders’ Debates on Prime Time wereinfluential features of the campaign. Thedebate between An Taoiseach Bertie Ahernand Fine Gael Leader, Enda Kenny hadan average of almost a million viewers andRTÉ.ie had a total of one and a half millionhits on the day. The RTÉ Exit Poll foundthat 68% of those who voted in the GeneralElection had watched the Leaders’ Debate.The Election Results programmes on Radioand Television were huge undertakings.Election 2007 on RTÉ Radio 1 ran from12pm on Friday 25 May until 4.00 am onSaturday, resuming a few hours later. RTÉRadio had journalists in each of the 43constituencies.Election 2007 on RTÉ One had moreOutside Broadcast (OB) and Satellite unitsdelivering pictures from around the countrythan ever before and over 400 peopleworking on the programme. The marathoncoverage drew massive audience figures– the peak viewership was 789,000 duringthe RTÉ Nine O’Clock News that evening.All television election coverage was subtitled.A record ten million hits were registeredby RTÉ.ie over the four day period fromPolling Day until Sunday. Most users werebased in Ireland, followed by Britain, theUSA and in smaller numbers, the EU,Canada and Australia.Other Editorial MattersOther important national stories duringthe year included: the breast cancercontroversy, initially in Barrington’sPrivate Hospital in Limerick and laterin the Midlands Hospital in Portlaoise;the continuing high level of road deaths- highlighted in an RTÉ News Special;the Rachel O’Reilly murder trial; NorthernIreland where an Executive including theDUP and Sinn Fein was formed; the sinkingof three trawlers off the southern coast; thedeath of two part-time firemen in a blaze inBray; the contamination of Galway’s watersupplies; and the opening of Croke Park torugby and soccer games.As part of the station’s continuingcommitment to the regions, RTÉ Newsestablished a new role of regional reporterfor the Western region.RTÉ Nuacht opened two new locations in2007 in An Daingean in Kerry and BaileBhuirne in Cork. The number of Nuachtvideo journalists increased to four in 2007.In a major innovation in foreign coverage,RTÉ News established a presence in Chinafor the coming Olympic year. MargaretWard, Foreign Editor, set up a news bureauin Beijing in September. 2008 will be anexceptionally busy year there, with a bigfocus on China including coverage of theOlympics and the Paralympics. Margaretwill report on all aspects of Chinese life forRadio, Television and Online.Prime Time maintained its anchor role inthe RTÉ Television schedule. A strongseries of Prime Time Investigates includedprogrammes on Planning; the dangers ofthe drug Nimesulide; the widespread use ofcocaine and the gangland criminals runningthe trade; and fuel smuggling operationsalong the border.OperationalThe main technological innovation of theyear was the introduction of the new graphicsystem Vizrt to News. Name credits, sportsresults and business news can now betyped into templates and go straight to air.The other major technological developmentin News has been the introduction of livestreaming for Radio. This means thatreporters can broadcast live through alaptop from any location in the country, orindeed the world, without the need to hireOB facilities or circuits. This technology wasused for RTÉ Radio’s reports from the UNclimate change conference in Bali.Campaign Daily, an innovative hour-longprogramme on Television was linkedto the specially created RTÉ Electionwebsite.The debate between between AnTaoiseach Bertie Ahern and Fine GaelLeader, Enda Kenny had an average ofalmost a million viewers.A strong series of Prime TimeInvestigates included programmeson Planning; the dangers of the drugNimesulide; the widespread use ofcocaine and the gangland criminalsrunning the trade; and fuel smugglingoperations along the border.18
