Many of these areassociated with new distribution platformswhich result in further fragmentation oftelevision viewing and the uptake of newtechnologies.Set against this, RTÉ achieved a 37.1%share of viewing among all individualsnationally each day across 2007 – asignificant success when compared tothe combined share for the five main rivalterrestrial broadcasters available to Irishaudiences (32.1%) and the combinedshare of all the remaining commercialchannels available on cable and digitalplatforms (30.8%).Source: AGB Nielsen Media ResearchSource: AGB Nielsen Media ResearchAt peak time (18:00-23:29) thecorresponding share figures are 43.7% forRTÉ, 31.9% for the five main rival terrestrialbroadcasters combined and an aggregateof 24.4% for all the remaining commercialchannels available on the cable and digitalplatforms.Nine of the Top 10 programmes on allchannels in 2007 were broadcast by RTÉ.Live television provides opportunities tobe inclusive and to enable participation innational events. The list highlights how RTÉTelevision takes the broadest perspectivewith the live drama of electoral politics,mass-appeal entertainment and sportingoccasions all featuring strongly.Overall, RTÉ Television continued todominate the list of the 100 most watchedprogrammes in Ireland in 2007. Thisstrength in market share contributed also tothe continuing rise in advertising revenue.Live broadcasts of GAA Hurling andFootball finals from Croke Park were bothin the top 10 most watched programmesin Ireland during 2007.Beyond Endurance saw ‘wannabeexplorers’ follow in the footsteps of SirErnest Shackleton on the harsh Antarcticterrain of South Georgia.8
