CraigbuildssmartteamBy DAVID BRASCHCRAIG Chandler admits his love affairwith greyhound racing has been an “onagain, off again” affair. At the moment ... he’s in love.Craig, 44, has a small, but everexpandingteam of dogs at his Buccanproperty including the promising SirCyrus a recent Gold Coast, Capalaba andIpswich winner in fast times.Craig’s love of the industry wasinstilled in him by his dad Roy.“Dad and a bunch of mates got a fewdogs years ago,” said Craig. “One of thosewas Agricola Lass who was trained byDarryl Heck and went from fifth grade toFFA class at the Gabba, specially over 704metres.“Everyone had a good time with her.”As is the usual case, one dog led toanother, which led to another.“The boys bred with Agricola Lass andit went from there,” said Craig.By then 19 years old and wanting toget into the swing of things in greyhoundracing, Craig and his father bought a dogfrom Melbourne called Tivoli Tootsie whoeventually won “five or six” at the old GoldCoast track.“And we bred from Tivoli Toostsie,” hesaid. “Got five pups and kept them allincluding Tivoli Gamble who was aLawnton specialist winning 18 of her 54starts.”Craig was training by this time, dadwas left to finance the venture.Saturday (night) April 1Heats Golden Easter Egg (520m)Best 80 plus reserves. A courteous letterthanking a licensee for their time would have sufficed.I came to the conclusion, like many others no doubt, that the decisions were alreadymade and they were only going through the beaurocratic process of “consultation.”I would like to give another example of the “customer friendliness” the GRA are totheir participants. Recently, my wife was paid some prizemoney by mistake. A commonoccurrence, I believe. We only train one dog at the moment and he won his next two races. We assumed they would adjust on the next payment. No. The money had to be paid backseparately. My wife paid the money into the local office before Christmas. We resume racing in the New Year and here is my wife’s “Wanted Dead or Alive”photo on office wall as a Defaulter. Everyone got a laugh but when she went to nominatethe next week she was refused as she was a defaulter.I wonder why no one wants to race dogs in Queensland with a “big brother” attitudelike this.Phil McMillan (Licencee since 1977)The (March, 2006) Journal Page 10
ByDAVID BRASCHA GROUP of enthusiasts is behind apush for drag lure coursing to be introducedat Capalaba.Di O’Donnell, well know to thegreyhound racing industry as chief ofDinkyDi Web Designs, was sitting at homewatching Sky’s Catching Pen one Sunday.“I spotted a segment on drag lurecoursing and was fascinated, made a fewinquiries and here we are,” she told TheJournal.“Here we are” is to the stage where theCapalaba Club has got behind the idea withan approach to the GRA Board and a seriesof exhibition races are being planned, before a full scale drag lure coursingcalendar is introduced.Drag Lure Coursing is just like live harecoursing, but on a straight track, behind adrag lure of course, with two dogs slippedjust like it is still done in Ireland.Di and Capalaba recently hosted JudiHurley, the secretary and racing manager ofthe GBOTA Coursing Club in SouthAustralia, to give the Queenslanders someguidance etc on drag lure coursing. The South Australian club has 12 dateseach year and has a home track at Virginia,35 minutes from Adelaide but in the middleof the greyhound population in that state.“The season runs from April to October,a winter sport because of the factgreyhounds race sometimes up to threetimes a day.South Australia was the last state to stoplive hare coursing, back in the mid-80s.“Drag lure coursing is a greatalternative for some dogs, specially thosewho have difficulty getting around cornerson oval racetracks, or cannot run 500metres,” Judi told The Journal.Judi said her club has about 130members and the feature event each year isthe Waterloo Cup worth $3000 to thewinner. The running of that time-honouredevent alternates between the GBOTACoursing club and the Mt Gambier clubeach year. The Waterloo Cup is five rounds, withone of a Saturday and four to win the finalon the Sunday.“The distance of each slip is about 325metres from slips to the catching pen,” saidGraftonCarnivalGrafton Easter carnival is fastapproaching with heats of the EasterMaiden on Saturday April 8 with thefinal to be held on Saturday April 15,which will also see the running of theGrafton Derby and Oaks. Thanks to Sam Cauchi of RockyRidge Farm, Brian Kutner jnr (BlackEnforcer) and Jim Osborn (Elite State)free services to Elite State, BlackEnforcer and Cyrus The Virus will beprovided to the winners of the EasterMaiden, Derby and oaks. The Easter Maiden will be sponsoredby NSW GBOTA.The Derby and Oaks will besponsored by Sam Cauchi’s Rocky RidgeFarm, Brian Kutner jnr and JimOsborn.Racing is on a big, safe, loam surface.Country grading applies, see add in thisissue.Judi. “The actual race distance is about 300metres.”Capalaba’s drag lure coursing distanceswould be about the same.“The benefits of drag lure coursing aremany, as I have already mentioned,” saidJudi.“But because the slip is against only oneother dog, it also benefits field shy dogs, those that may be hopeless out of thestarting boxes, youngsters needing a bigconfidence booster, dogs coming back frominjury, and even those jaded by a lot ofcircle track racing.”The current star of drag lure coursing isToora Tiger a Victorian dog and a 29.80winner around Sandown.“He was put out at Sandown for fightingbut in three months coursing he has won$13,000 and was the first to win theVictorian and South Australian WaterlooCups.South Australia runs a Derby and Oaks, worth $800 to the respective winners, theCommittee Cup and the Rising Star Stakes. The latter is open to 16 dogs and iscompleted on the same day.“We have a bookie fielding on thecoursing and in years gone by he wouldturn over $40,000 on the day, but that hasdwindled to about $2000 these days,” saidJudi.“People love to go coursing.
