Cairns Post pics.Gorgas headsBoody plan forA COUPLE of years ago then Mackaybased Ken Boody, his dad Steve, and hisworkmate Brett Oliver decided to get agreyhound together. The initial venture wasn’t much good,so they went looking for a pup. It was hardto go past a South Australian-bred TokenPrince-True Angel bitch they sawadvertised in a southern newspaper. The dam had already produced twofinalists in Group races, and the breederwanted only $2500 for her and includeddelivery to Brisbane.“She was 12 weeks old and her dam hadwon 17 of her first 19 race starts,” saidBoody. “And two of her previous litter hadbeen Group finalists.”Cathy Gordon reared the white andfawn bitch at Coominya Lodge and she thenheaded over to Boody family friend TomNoble to be educated.“Tom had her for six months and evenbrought her up north when he was on hisannual Cup carnival trip late last year,” saidKen.But the bitch did not race, Nobledeciding to educate her around the northerntracks. Now named Gorgas, she had brokenin well and he thought she would developinto a handy galloper.“We had her in one night at Ipswich buttwo races before her race, the lure brokedown and the rest of the meeting was calledoff,” said Ken Boody. “We decided to bringher up north for some low grade races.”Gorgas has since become one of themost promising young gallopers in thenorth having already won a 410m YoungGuns series in Cairns and putting togetheran impressive strike rate. The Boodys have been a racing familyfor many years.“Dad had greyhounds on and off for 20years,” said Ken. “I started only about sixyears ago.”Last year the Boodys decided to sell upin Mackay and move to a 23-acre propertyat Black River near Townsville.“It has registered kennels, a straighttrack and bull ring and suits us perfectly,”said Ken. “It’s so tough to train dogsproperly from a house block.”Ken now has eight in training andGorgas is easily the best, so much so thatshe is already earmarked for a trip back toTom Noble in the future for a campaign inthe south.Gorgas was named by Steve Boodyafter Sir William Gorgas who found a curefor yellow fever. “Dad reasoned that SirWilliam Gorgas did great things, so thisbitch might follow him,” said Ken.Steve does most of the work with theBoody team at Black River while Kenworks during the day.Gorgas is already destined for abreeding future.“She’s so well bred,” said Ken. “Andher breeder Ben Murphy has been keepinga close watch on her progress up here.“He recently rang and asked to buysome bitches out of her when she goes tostud. This litter had only two pups a dogand this bitch.”Gorgas is from the famed SouthLeaders forthe past 16years in theCollection,Storage andInseminationof FrozenSemen totheGreyhoundRacingIndustryManly Road VetPhone(07) 33969733Australian damline of True Shadow.
