John's come backto greyhounds ...the Qld wayLarkhill Jo racing that night at either his firstor second race start,” said John.“He won by 15 lengths and ran just .05off the track record. I tried to buy him, butNick was not parting with him. He became asuperstar and a really great sire.”When John and Wendy got home toMelbourne, Savva rang back and said theycould buy Westar Dance. She came to Australia and when trainedby Robbie Britton won several races. At studshe was a goldmine, producing three litterswith some outstanding dogs from her litterby Just The Best.Westar Return ran a track record atCannington, Westar Sparkle and WestarSupreme were all top class. The bitches from Westar Dance now formthe basis of John and Wendy’s greyhoundracing future. But along the way they have not beenfrightened to buy a smart dog. Renzo Ferrariwas bought from Sarah Pringle and developedinto a top grader at The Meadows.“I even offered $45,000 for Big Smigwhen he was a youngster with the idea ofsending him to Ireland to contest their Derby,”said John. “He would have been a sensationover there.”About 14 months ago, John and Wendydecided they’d had enough of the cold inVictoria and moved to Pallara on Brisbane’soutskirts, buying a four acre propertypreviously owned by Mick Lindsay.“We brought a lot of average grade fivedogs from Melbourne up with us and quicklyrealized they were average grade five dogsup here as well,” he said.“The depth of fields in Victoria are better, six of the eight runners having great chances, but in Queensland it is more like three or fourof the eight runners with chances.”John left behind a stint of four years onthe committee at The Meadows, two of thoseas vice-chairman.“The Meadows is one of the mostprestigious clubs in Australia and areextremely progressive,” he said. “The moveto Saturday night racing has been wonderfullysuccessful.“The club spent plenty of money, employed its own chef and now the place ispacked for dinner every Saturday night.”John is proud of the fact he helped revampthe Australian Cup carnival with the inclusionof such feature events at The Temlee, RookieRebel etc.And for two years he helped produce thesuccessful radio program “At The Boxes” onSport 927 which involved The Meadows’popular CEO Marg Long and Geoff Collins.“It’s something that is long overdue inQueensland,” said Hutchison. “We found itgave owners and trainers a profile they hadnot been able to achieve before that. It liftedthe profile of the sport.”Hutchison has been in Brisbane sinceMarch last year and knows there are a myriadof ways to improve the industry here, speciallyat Albion Park.“Everyone seems to have given up atAlbion Park,” he said. “They obviouslybelieve they can’t get people there so whytry.”Hutchison reeled off a number of simpleideas he had to counter this.“And one thing I have noticed in theindustry in Queensland, there is no youngpeople coming through with dogs. It’ssomething we have to do something about andquickly,” he said.“Greyhound racing, with the exception ofMelbourne and Perth, seems to have lost ageneration or two in all states.”He sees the urgent need for a “young”committee at Albion Park.“It costs $25 to become a member at TheMeadows each year and for that each memberFOR SALEGREYHOUND PROPERTY(New, never been lived in)Upstairs: large bedroom, built-in robe, toilet and shower, carpeted.Downstairs: large lounge & kitchen, tiled.
