In every state the highlight of thecoursing season was the running of theWaterloo Cup.The Victorian Waterloo Cup had a longhistory going back to 1873. In the years before1953 only six greyhounds had been able towin the event twice. All were considered champions,Rhodanthe (1883 and ’85), Bloomer (1893and ’94), Ella Goldsmith (1908 and ’10),Brown Hawk (1916 and ’17), Father’sFootsteps (1930 and ’31) and Kreuger (1934and ’35).Byamee was to win the VictorianWaterloo Cup a record three times! In 1953, as a puppy, he divided theVictorian St Leger with his sister Rarcambaand then took on the older dogs in theWaterloo Cup at Bendigo. He performedbrilliantly through the event and defeated TrueScamper in the final. The following year the Cup wasconducted at Tynong. Once again Byameedominated and won the final against GallantPlume. In 1955 the Cup was staged atMaryborough and a large crowd gathered tosee if Byamee could create history. He didn’tdisappoint, completing a unique hat-trick withvictory over Wanalta Chief in the final.Byamee’s owner, Ray Herbert, was alegend in sport. His wins included sixVictorian Waterloo Cups, three NSWWaterloo Cups, three Victorian Derbies andthree NSW Oaks.Apart from Byamee, his most famousgreyhounds were Silver Chief, Some Laddie,Orion, Ariki, Ever Dandy, Karween,Coonega, Yarloop, Menang and Tarryhere.Byamee (Yarloop-Tarryhere, by SilverChief) had a very interesting pedigree and onethat is testament to the great influence RayHerbert had on the breed.Herbert owned both his sire Yarloop andhis dam dam Tarryhere. He also ownedYarloop’s sire, Menang and dam MoonshineMaid as well as Moonshine Maid’s parentsGrey Friar and My Lady. Herbert bred GreyFriar (Kreuger-Silvermane), a half brother tohis champion, Silver Chief (by Pharminda)who also appears in Byamee’s pedigree asthe maternal grand-sire.The most striking aspect of Byamee’spedigree is that linebreeding to Silvermaneand Pharminda, both 4x3 crosses.Silvermane’s brother Cliff’s Pride alsoappears in the top half of the pedigree givinga 5x5x4 cross to both parents, Cubby andShady Burn.It is probably one of the best examples ofthe Rasmussen Factor at work. i.e.linebreeding to a bitch, or in this case twobitches, Silvermane and Shady Burn. There was a lot of quality in Byamee’sdamline. His mother Tarryhere (Silver Chief-Lassalla) was an outstanding coursing bitchwinning the 1949 Victorian Waterloo Cupand dividing the 1948 NSW Waterloo Cup.She was also the dam of the influentialbroodbitches Luckyhere and Rarcamba.Luckyhere was the dam of championcourser Merrileigh Prince (1959 VictorianDerby, 1960 Victorian Waterloo Cup) andOakleigh Here who divided the 1956 SAOaks.Oakleigh Here bred on and can be foundbehind many fine performers such as Sonny’sWindfall, Chukka Khan, Swanston Roi,Condominium, Cool It Pop and MelmadeGazza. She also appears in the damline ofSuemara, a line which has been verysuccessful for Neville Robson withrepresentatives like He’s Allegro, SpiritedCopy, Genuine Scandal, Go Series, BlueSeries, Kapalga, True Boy, Allegro Jet, BluePisces, Cadency King, Hot Treasure, Cruz Proand Sottie Allover.Rarcamba’s daughter Trail View made amark on South Australia’s coursing classicswith the success of progeny such as Civic Bev,Civic Topsy, Civic View, Proud Paddy andCivic Sunbeam.Tarryhere’s mother Lassalla (Quanialla-Percyton Lass) also produced Okere (1949NSW Oaks) and the good performerNerinyerie who bobs up in some goodpedigrees through his daughters, e.g. ChinaLane (grand-dam of Thunder Lane).Lassalla was a sister to some top classgreyhounds including Percyton Lad (1943 SADerby) who became one of the mostsuccessful coursing sires in the history of thesport.Byamee’s sire Yarloop (Menang-Moonshine Maid) was best known forwinning the Melbourne Cup on the speedcoursing track at Napier Park.Although probably considered just ahandy sire overall, Yarloop also sired theoutstanding bitch Karween who the 1950NSW Waterloo Cup, 1948 NSW CoursingOaks, 1949 Woodstock Cup, divided the1948 Victorian Waterloo Cup and ran up inthat same event in 1951.At the time Byamee was retired to stud, mechanical lure racing was about to begin inVictoria.Byamee had been a great champion on thecoursing fields but there was a query overwhether his pups would adapt to themechanical lure or if they would be justcoursing greyhounds.Consequently he didn’t receive as manybitches as he might have in an earlier era andwas represented by just 102 litters. At studByamee sired Copeland (1961 Australian Cupat North Melbourne), Dalemee (1961 BallaratCup), My Riant (1956 Victorian CoursingOaks), Slippermee (1959 Bendigo Cup), TheJink, Bogamee, Gay Gambler and CheethamLad.It was a fair return but it gave no indicationof the impact that Byamee would have whenthe progeny of his daughters appeared on thetrack. The most famous of Byamee’s daughterswas Byam Rose, one of Australia’s greatestbroodbitches. Her progeny included Saskaview (1963Melbourne Cup (Spk), 1963 AnniversaryHdcp (Opk), 1963 Sandown 500, TRWentworth Park 580y, Olympic Park 560m),The Stripper (1964 Australian C’ship(Hpk),1963 Holiday Hdcp (Spk), TRSandown Park 565y), Sungari (1960 and 1961Sandown 500, TR North Melbourne 425y),Saskagay (1962 Melbourne Cup (Spk)), PineMulga (1960 Puppy C’ship at NorthMelbourne, TR Sandown Park 565y), HaremBelle (1965 Wangaratta Cup, TR Harold Park500y), Fast Talk (TR Sandown Park 785y)and the classy sprinter Bandar Prince whosired the champion, The Smoother.Saskaview, The Stripper, Sungari andPine Mulga all had success at stud althoughthey weren’t represented by large numbers oflitters. The Byam Rose damline has continuedto breed on. Stars like Pretty Fearless, LordTegimi, Hot Spell, Worth Backing and Ding’sWonder were from this line while recentlyTraction Control, Jennev, Rare Aussie andMr Faithful have kept the flag flying.Bylane (Byamee-Belinda Jane) was thedam of the outstanding sprinter Fawn NullaThe (March, 2006) Journal Page 26

The only really other oustanding litterwas the Chief Zephyr-Mee Do whichproduced Worthing, Chief Anama andGlenda Gale.Surprisingly he didn’t appear to clickparticularly well with Black Top (arguablythe leading stud dog of that era) although hegot a more than useful litter out of GayGambler containing Gambling King andBristol Fashion and also sired Favourite Girlout of Gay Harbor. It is doubtful if there has been a broodbitchsire who could match the deeds of Byamee, particularly considering he only sired 102litters. One only has to browse through thepedigrees of our major Cup winners to seethe mark he made on breeding just as he didon the coursing fields all those years ago.AUSTRALIAN WINNING LINESVolume 12 - 2004 $50 (inc postage & handling)Containing all the usual features of the greyhound year: City Winners; Sires, Dams &Maternal Grandsires of City Winners; Western Australia; Australian Feature RaceWinners; Sires, Dams, Maternal Grandsires and Pedigrees of Feature Race Winners;Australian Track Records and Overseas Feature Winners.Cheques/Money Orders payable to:Peter Rose, PO Box 330, Jimboomba, Qld, 4280.Ph (07) 5548 6687GraftonOaks407mBest 8 BitchesApril 151st $1000 plus free serivce toCyrus The Virus2nd $3003rd $150LIMITED CARAVAN ACCOMMODATION AVAILABLE ON COURSE.
