generationsof Townsville greyhound racing.Daniel didn't have a choiceDANIEL Miles didn’t have much say in the matter. He was destined to be a greyhound trainer from the first few months of his life.Daniel’s mum, recently elected Townsville Club president Kate Miles, rememberstaking a then few weeks old Daniel greyhound racing in Cairns. But Kate and her husband Gary has a similar history in racing.Gary’s mum Beryl, now 76, has been a long-time stalwart of greyhound racing inthe north.“Beryl was one of the first with a greyhound when racing started in Townsville allthose years ago,” said Kate.Kate Miles has had a long history of involvement in the running of greyhoundracing in the Townsville area. She was president of the local owners and trainers association for two years, hasbeen a member for as long as she can remember and is still on the committee,She has also served on the Townsville club committee for some years, spent a timeas vice-chairman and is now president.“I’m there to help, always have been,” she said.“I want to keep things moving at the club, keep racing rolling along. This is theleading greyhound racing centre outside the south-east.”The Miles have a small team in training, with Daniel, 23, holding the reins. Most are from a Scottish Express-Lighthouse Girl litter and include recent CairnsMaiden 1000 winner Bally Rattler and littermate Tears Of Delight.Dam Lighthouse Girl was bought as a maiden from the south by Daniel’sgrandmother Beryl and headed north to win “eight or 10 races”.It is the bitch’s first litter.“Beryl has won a lot of races in the many years she’s been training,” said Kate.“And she’s always had a dog in two in training.”Daniel has followed in the footsteps of his family.“Right from the time he was little he would come walking the dogs with us, but bythe time he was in high school he really got interested,” said Kate.Daniel too is a member of the Townsville Club committee.Kate’s plans for the club centre on its success.“I believe our push for TAB coverage of greyhound racing in Townsville mustcontinue,” she said.“We’ve been after this for the past 10 years and will keep pushing for it.”Townsville is a major racing centre.“We always get trainers from Cairns, and often from Mackay and Rockhamptonracing here. And they keep coming back,” she said.Kate works for a local transport company but jokes she doesn’t let that interferewith her obligations to the greyhound industry. It runs in the family.Kennel of Dreams back bigger than everCould you be the ultimate fantasygreyhound trainer?Greyhound Racing Victoria’sinaugural on-line virtual competitionKennel of Dreams, launched lastOctober, has returned bigger and betterin 2006.Building on the success of Kennel ofDreams that was conducted throughoutthe 2005 Superdogs Series, this timearound races and greyhounds from rightacross Australia will be involved.Beginning with the AJS AustraliaCup at The Meadows on March 4,Kennel of Dreams participants will needto select a team of greyhounds that willscore them points across 19 other majorgroup races (including six Group 1’s),finishing with the Maturity Classic atThe Meadows on May 20.As with last year, participants willhave the opportunity to compete againstevery other player in the competition, aswell as competing just against friends inyour own private league. This year will also see participantsable to go head to head with a celebrityexpert tipster, and see how yourgreyhound knowledge really stacks up.Entries into the Kennel of Dreamsclose at midnight on Friday 3 March, ready for competition to begin with theAJS Australian Cup the following night.Participants will be able to changetheir kennel of greyhounds throughoutthe competition, in one of the fourdesignated official trade periods.
