He also couldn’t wait to get workingso he could afford the greyhounds heZ ammit'sRearing <strong>and</strong>Spelling Farm'If you want yourpuppy to havegood nutrition,plenty ofgalloping <strong>and</strong>constant care,take advantage ofyears ofexperience withinthe industry <strong>and</strong>give it the beststart in life onour farm'GEORGEZAMMITFor any information, pedigrees, faxes, e-mails or photosContact George Zammit (07) 54266209wanted <strong>and</strong> picked up an apprenticeshipas a carpenter.“I bought my first dog for $1000when I was 18,” Ryan told The Journal.It was Royston Magic (TravellingGhost-Magic Mittens) which he boughtat an Ipswich Auction <strong>and</strong> proceeded towin five races with including his one <strong>and</strong>only Thursday night win at Albion Parkon March 11, 1999.“But at 18 I decided to move out ofhome <strong>and</strong> into a house with some mates,so greyhounds took a back seat for ashort time,” said Ryan.Royston Magic joined Roy’s kennels<strong>and</strong> won 10 more races.But it wasn’t that successful a startfor Ryan.“Royston Magic had eight starts <strong>and</strong>didn’t run a place, but then won amaiden heat <strong>and</strong> final at Capalaba, tworaces at Ipswich <strong>and</strong> then the Thursdaynight win at Albion Park,” he said.Ryan <strong>and</strong> his mates parted ways sixyears ago when he met Samantha <strong>and</strong>the pair have been together since,marrying in September last year.“We bought a place at WavellHeights together in 2001 <strong>and</strong> straightaway I got a few more dogs,” said Ryan.Peter Roy had great success withRoyston Raider (Worthy Reward-Una’sRevenge) who set a track record over630m at Ipswich.Peter <strong>and</strong> Ryan shared ownership inRoyston Mist a daughter of Arelem <strong>and</strong>Una’s Revenge.“We put Royston Mist to ShapeShifter <strong>and</strong> I got four of the litter, GameOver, Amigo Fast, Raid The Gold <strong>and</strong>Enshape <strong>and</strong> they all won races for me,”said Ryan.Game Over was the best winning ninebut he had very little early pace.Enshape finished fourth at Albion Parkin a National Distance state final.In all the four won 22 races for Ryan.Only a few months ago Ryan <strong>and</strong>Youthful trainer Ryan Ayre withpromising youngster Hoi Poloi.Samantha bought Les Lewis’Burpengary greyhound property.“We’d had a few problems with thecouncil over the dogs at Wavell Heights,so when this property came up, wejumped at the chance,” said Ryan.“We’ve got kennels, pup yards <strong>and</strong> astraight track all on three acres. It’sperfect for the six dogs I’ve got.”Ryan keeps himself busy. He has justbeen appointed a supervisor for CraftBuilding.He’s up at 4am to work his dogs <strong>and</strong>home in the afternoon to go racing.His team includes highly promisingHoi Poloi in who he shares ownershipwith Peter Roy.He also has two Surf Lorian-BogieBenz pups at seven months old which heshares ownership with Col “Hollywood”Hamilton.Ryan came to train Hoi Poloi, winnerof her first five starts, by accident.“Peter decided to sell up his Arana Hillshome <strong>and</strong> move to Kallangur so I got thedogs while he was setting up his newhome,” said Ryan.Hoi Poloi has continued to improve<strong>and</strong> is targeting the Ipswich Auctionseries.Ryan has a plan to stay in greyhoundracing for good.“I’m looking at getting bitches totrain <strong>and</strong> breed myself a future in thisindustry,” he said.“Samantha loves the dogs <strong>and</strong> helpsout a lot with the GAP program.“I’ll keep my team to a manageablenumber.”Ryan is managing them to perfection.A dog is the onlything on earth thatloves you more thanhe loves himselfThe (March, 2006) Journal Page 8
Heat stress hits WhiskyJOURNEY Park Stud <strong>and</strong> Terry Hines, owner of WhiskyAssassin, have announced the son of Awesome Assassin-PrincessWhisky has suffered heat stress recently which has had a shorttermimpact on his sperm production.During December/January, Sydney suffered 40-degreetemperatures.
