Andrew ThomsonVictoriaLetterto theEditorDear Sir,BALLARAT owner Darren Murrayand trainer Cameron Taylor are enjoyingthe ride of their lives. The dynamic duo have Melbourne Cupwinner Closing Argument and WarragulCup victor Vapour Whirl firing in the leadupto the Australian Cup.Vapour Whirl won the Warragul Cup ina sensational 23.74 and has picked up 15wins from 25 starts. His other best winning times include theMeadows 29.74, Geelong 25.60,Healesville 18.61, Horsham 27.13,Warrnambool 25.11 and he finished third inthe Cranbourne Cup behind Pororoca intrack record time.Murray rates Vapour Whirl the quickerof his kennel stars.“I’ve had a lot of good dogs over theyears but never had two in the kennel thisquick at the one time,” he said. It’s also interesting that both sprintersare not by highly fashionable sired, ClosingArgument by Exceptional and VapourWhirl by Ashigga.Murray said Closing Argument trialled25.14 between races at Ballarat in the lead-up to the Australian Cup.“The chances of one of them winningthe Australian Cup would have to beenormous,” he said.“They can both break 29.80 at theMeadows and there’s not that many whocan do that."Vapour Whirl is faster than any dogI’ve had but Closing Argument is a betterrace dog because he just begins everytime.’’Murray said Taylor only had 10greyhounds in work with about 15 pupscoming through. He said he believed the key to theExceptional pups were letting them maturebefore they were broken-in.“I’ve got a few more coming throughwho are going all right and they’ll winraces,” he said.“You have to give them time to grow upor you can break them down. I think anawful lot of them haven’t been given theopportunities they needed to show theirbest. You need to leave them until they’re atleast 15 or 16 months.’’Murray said Vapour Whirl was out of asister to former smart sprinter JimmyNeutron while Closing Argument went backto Queensland’s Sheza Nightmare line.Murray previously trained BraydenShiraz which briefly held the Sale trackrecord before later breaking both hocks.“Closing Argument is out of a sister toBrayden Shiraz,” he said.“She raced in Darwin and I managed toget her back. She won a dozen races and Ithought on her breeding she was worth atry."Sheza Nightmare just knocked upthrowing winners and that line is continuingon now,” he said.In reference to the article inthe February Journal onJames Heddles, I would like topoint out the situation withregards to Hareeba Ghost.I owned the greyhound andleased the dog to Heddles. The dog later was thesubject of a stewards inquiryand stewards ordered the leasebe cancelled.Hareeba Ghost returned tomy kennels and then won fourmore races for us and wasplaced a number of times.Yours faithfullyRex MarshallThe (March, 2006) Journal Page 23
