July 21 [<strong>Jennie</strong>]We left Mud Springs late this morning as our horses had taken french leave.... found them 9 miles fromcamp crossed Snake River about noon camped on S<strong>and</strong> Spring Creek a short distance above the falls I wasto see them this eve it is a gr<strong>and</strong> sight the gorge is splendid crossed salmon River a mile above the ferry TheShoshone Indians made a rade on our freight ..... six shots fired no one hurtJuly 22 [<strong>Kate</strong>]Tuesday:We left S<strong>and</strong> Springs Creek this morning about eight O’clock <strong>and</strong> traveled twelve miles to Malad Riverwhere we stoped for the remainder <strong>of</strong> the day grass very scarce. The road was very s<strong>and</strong>y which made itvery hard on the stock Malad River is a natural curiosity the greatest I ever seen ........ great it ( ) very rapid<strong>and</strong> ( ) two falls only short distance from here The banks <strong>and</strong> bottoms is solid rock. The bank is about twohundred feet high about a mile South <strong>of</strong> here. The men all are prepared to for the Indians should they maketheir appearance.12 milesJuly 22 [<strong>Jennie</strong>]Left camp about nine oclock. traveled twelve miles <strong>and</strong> camped for the rest <strong>of</strong> the day on Malad River thisis a curious stream <strong>Kate</strong> <strong>and</strong> I were a curiosity this eve.... the watter falls about fifty feet <strong>and</strong> runs under anatural rock bridge had quite an Indian scare today plenty grassJuly 23 [<strong>Kate</strong>]Wednesday: We left Malad <strong>and</strong> traveled fifteen miles to a small steam <strong>and</strong> camped. Had good grass butmiserable water.
