Roman Catholic Faithful, Inc. / AMDG May 2004 Albany newsletterchairman Terry McAuliffe and other top Democratsand union officials for a money-laundering schemeuncovered by her own office in what is known as theTeamsters Swap Scandal. In an open-ended investigation that couldeasily cost $10,000 per day, Catholics in Albany wantto know if the cost is being underwritten by someoneoutside the diocese, since the legal services are far tooexpensive for a diocese to meet, even in flush times.NEW COMPLICATIONSComplicating the bishop’s problems are twoother recent developments. On February 23, Fr. Minkler’s 1995 letter toJohn Cardinal O’Connor detailing clerical misconductand his January 2001 hand-written letter to RCF’sBrady naming 30 homosexual priests in the dioceseappeared on at least two different Internet sites.News that the letters are on the Internet firstappeared on the FreeRepublic.com web site, whichhas been a venue for hundreds of people speakingabout the Hubbard scandal, and among the readers areCatholics in Albany who are posting such commentsas, “Oh, my God, my pastor is on the list!”Also, there is another challenge to BishopHubbard’s credibility regarding the sequence ofevents that led to the late Fr. Minkler’s disavowal ofthe letter he wrote to O’Connor.Fr. Joseph Wilson, the Brooklyn priest whowas one of the last people to speak with Minkler, disclosedthat Fr. Minkler was summoned to the AlbanyCatholic chancery while on retreat at St. Joseph’s Abbeyin Spencer, Mass.“Fr. Minkler was told by the Guestmaster ofSt. Joseph’s that the chancery had placed an urgentcall to the abbey for him, and Fr. Minkler returned thecall Thursday afternoon from Spencer.“He spoke twice that afternoon with Fr.[Ken] Doyle, the chancellor, and once to a womanreporter in the Albany area, and then returned to AlbanyFriday morning, earlier than he had planned,”Wilson told The Wanderer.Bishop Hubbard has consistently maintainedthat Fr. Minkler called him to request the meeting, sohe could disavow the letter to O’Connor. Minkler wasdead two days later. # # #STATEMENT TO THE PRESSCrown Plaza Hotel, Albany,February 22, 2004, by Paul LikoudisThe death of my good friend and close collaboratorfor the past 13 years is devastating to mepersonally and completely unnecessary. Do I blameBishop Howard Hubbard for this tragedy? Yes, I do.But there are other culprits and hosts of guilty bystanders. After the release of “Agony In Albany” 13years ago, a ten-part series on the dismal record ofBishop Hubbard in this diocese, which I wrote withthe close cooperation of Fr. Minkler, the bishopshould have had the decency to resign, for his owngood and for the good of Catholics and the generalpopulation of the Diocese of Albany.Instead, he instituted a reign of psychologicaland institutional terror, focused in particular againstthe good priests and the good Catholic laity of hisown diocese, as evidenced by the demand that priestsindividually and collectively rise to his defense anddenounce me, The Wanderer, and, in particular the“Agony in Albany” series, and members of the Coalitionof Concerned Catholics – from the pulpits onSunday mornings – without any attempts to answer orrebut any of the numerous crimes and malfeasanceswhich were exposed and documented. This has continuedto last week when Hubbard brought unbearablepressure to Fr. Minkler himself. The abuse of Fr. Minkler, this reporter, andthe Catholic people of the Diocese of Albany continues.Bishop Hubbard’s decision to pressure Fr.Minkler to sign a phony disclaimer is part of that 13-year campaign. His current decision to hire attorney Mary JoWhite at $770 per hour – higher than the averageweekly wage of most of his struggling flock – withunlimited budget for her expensive investigators andancillaries – is yet another example of his willingnessto fleece his flock. No amount of money – and Mary Jo White’sinvestigation could end up costing Catholics ten thousanddollars a day – can possibly absolve BishopHubbard or rehabilitate his shattered image.During the 10 week run of “Agony in Albany”from the first week of March 1991 to the secondweek of May, 1991, Bishop Hubbard went to hisfriends at the Albany Times Union to generate a seriesof positive reports that portrayed him as the very20
Roman Catholic Faithful, Inc. / AMDG May 2004 Albany newslettermodel of a very modern bishop. At the same time“Agony In Albany” was reporting the concerns ofpriests and laity that Hubbard had a policy of recruitinghomosexuals to the priesthood, some of whomhad been expelled from other seminaries, he even defendedhis policy of recruiting homosexuals in theTimes Union. After “Agony In Albany” was printed, theCoalition of Concerned Catholics in Albany circulatedmore than 5,000 copies of the assembled tenarticles, and sent copies to all reporters and editorsand priests in the Diocese of Albany, politicians, police, other professionals and diocesan bureaucrats andparish leadership. It had no restorative effect. To the contrary,Hubbard’s persecution of good Catholics, lay andclerical, intensified, and the abuses continued andincreased during the past 13 years.Because an acquiescent media was told toignore The Wanderer, because it was “extremist,”Hubbard was emboldened and empowered.Additionally, Hubbard would never havebeen permitted to conduct his reign of terror againstthe Catholics of Albany if he did not understand implicitlythat he had the protection of the press, thepoliticians, the police and above all, most of his fellowAmerican bishops. Why didn’t Catholic Governor Mario Cuomointercede for the Catholics of Albany and advise Hubbardto step aside?Where is Catholic Governor George Pataki? Why, for the good of the Church, doesn’t he quietlytell Hubbard he has lost all credibility?Where are all the prominent Catholic politiciansand professionals and the influential, wealthyCatholics? Why not speak the truth to Hubbard andtell him he must step aside.Where are the media? Why are they givingHubbard a pass on one of the most notable fleecingsof his flock for his own personal benefit and protection? If an institution cannot correct its corruptionfrom within, it needs to be corrected from outside. Itis time for the politicians, the police, the press and theCatholic people to demand that Howard Hubbard stepaside or be degraded from the office of Bishop of Albanybefore there are any more tragedies like thedeath of good, courageous Fr. John Minkler. # # #http://www.cruxnews.com/rose/rose-27feb04.html27 February 2004Priest's mysterious death complicatesAlbany bishop's quest to clear his nameTwo separate accusations that Bishop HowardHubbard had homosexual relations, includingpaying for sex with a 16-year-old minor, have leftthe leader of the Albany diocese embarrassed andhumiliated. At press conferences, in public statements, and on talk radio he has steadfastly refutedboth allegations, saying that he has "never had sexualrelations with anyone."But it is the death of Fr. John Minkler thathas severely complicated matters for the accusedbishop. Fr. Minkler, 57, was found dead in hishome on Sunday, February 15. Three days before, the deceased priest was identified in a televisionnews report as the author of a 1995 report addressedto New York’s Cardinal John J. O’Connor. Amongother things, the letter detailed "a ring of homosexualAlbany priests" including Bishop Howard Hubbard’salleged long-term homosexual relationshipswith two younger priests.Police won’t say how Fr. Minkler died, only that the circumstances surrounding his deathare not yet clear. The coroner has yet to release hisreport of the autopsy. But that’s only the beginning. Bishop Hubbardappears to be caught in a lie, and according tosources close to the late priest, the bishop may alsohave forced Fr. Minkler to lie.In a Feb. 16 press conference (the day afterFr. Minkler's death), Bishop Hubbard announcedthat Fr. Minkler disavowed authorship of the controversialreport in a written affidavit signed at diocesanheadquarters two days before his death. Thebishop also claimed that Fr. Minkler arrived thereof his own free-will and assured everyone that hewas not summoned there: "Fr. Minkler made anappointment to see me, and he told me that he didnot author the letter, and he wanted to be with meface-to-face and to assure me that he had not writtenanything to Cardinal O’Connor about me…andhe did not know how his name got associated withthe letter."Stephen Brady, head of the Illinois-basedRoman Catholic Faithful, was the first to contradictthat report of events. Brady revealed that Fr. Minklerhad been working with his lay Catholic group21
