Roman Catholic Faithful, Inc. / AMDG May 2004 Albany newslettercalled “Portal” officially, but “the pretzel” by others, was erected adjacent to the Cathedral of the ImmaculateConception. It is supposed to signify the historicreconciliation between Jews and Catholics that hastaken place in Albany.Catholics such as Paul Kerin point out thatBishop Hubbard is referred to as “our Bishop” by theJewish community, and he wonders, considering thestate of the Diocese, if these ecumenical outreachesaren’t weakening the faith of Catholics.“From what I read in the Albany papers, andThe Evangelist, the Bishop spends a great deal of timein ecumenical activities with Protestants and Jews. This would be a laudable activity as long as the focusis on teaching Jews and Protestants that the Churchhas the truth.“When it’s ‘Let’s all be equals,’ and there isno effort at conversion activity or evangelical witness,it seems like a waste of time and causes a reduction ofthe Faith in the eyes of ordinary Catholics. . . .“We’re living in an apostate Church here, andour Bishop doesn’t seem willing to teach the CatholicFaith to those who most need it.”Part IXThe Bishop And His Circle“All the people in key positions are crazy . . .off the wall” – an Albany priest. When Bishop Howard Hubbard began hisreign over the Diocese in Albany in March, 1977, hewas hailed as another St. Ambrose, that Doctor of theChurch from the fourth century who is justly famousas a liturgist, as a great moral theologian , who wrotetreatises on virginity, and as a defender of the rightsof the Church. St. Ambrose insisted that the state hadthe duty to protect the Catholic Church, and he eloquentlypreached against the heretics of his time. The editor of The Evangelist stated: “BishopHoward J. Hubbard would be embarrassed to be comparedto Ambrose — or to anyone important for thatmatter, for humility is deep within his heart. But onecan hardly miss the similarities: Ambrose was chosenbecause he was upright in administration, blamelessin character, sterling in piety, tender to the poor.“These qualities belong also to the ninthBishop of Albany and explain the universal acceptance— even more the universal excitement —which has greeted his selection.”This view of the Bishop as a saint was againexpressed to readers of The Evangelist when BishopHubbard marked his 25th anniversary as a priest, inDecember, 1988.His sister’s niece, Caroline Kawola, a studentat Bishop Maginn High School, wrote: “The mostsaintly person 1 know is Bishop Howard J. Hubbard.”She revealed how “he has helped the Churchand the community in every way he sees fit,” andhow he “has the patience of a saint.”Again, “I think Bishop Hubbard is saintly forall the work, time, and effort he has put into our communitiesand churches. Bishop Hubbard is definitely aman with enough saintly qualities to go around.”She also upbraided those who criticize theBishop for closing schools, saying, “I don’t see thesepeople lending a hand in trying to keep the schoolsopen. . . .Bishop Hubbard is a remarkable man forhaving the courage to do what his line of work entails.”In the same special anniversary issue, ValerieE. Dillon (a dissenter from Humanae Vitae and a sexeducationadvocate), then president of the NationalAssociation of Catholic Diocesan Family Life Ministers, stated that Bishop Hubbard is “a good man, aholy man, and kind.”Fr. Michael Farano, then chancellor, wrotethat Bishop Hubbard “gives all that is in him to hisGod and the Son Jesus, whom he loves and serveswith a passion.”“A Nice Man”Though not ready to proclaim him a saint, even the Bishop’s most persistent critics give himvery high marks for his excellent human relationsskills.Layman Tom Coffey admits, “Bishop Hubbardhas always responded to my letters — and I’vehit him with some real haymakers. He always makesme feel ashamed of myself, he’s so kind to me. Afterwe have a meeting, before I leave, he takes my handsinto his own, looks at me with those St. Alphonsuseyes, thanks me for my concerns, and I feel bad forever questioning his leadership.”“He is very popular, and the people lovehim,” says Edward Brietenbach, who with his wifeMildred, coordinated a Marian Tour of the statue of64
Roman Catholic Faithful, Inc. / AMDG May 2004 Albany newsletterOur Lady of Fatima throughout the Diocese. “Peoplewho meet him once say, ‘He's such a nice man,’ andthe Bishop makes a point of meeting everyone at leastonce.“He’s a master at the Dale Carnegie methodof pleasing people,” adds Brietenbach. When an Albany Catholic calls the Bishop totalk to him about any particular problem, the Bishopwill always schedule an appointment. “He’ll listenand listen, and let you talk all you want,” says apriest, “and then when you’re finished, he’ll say — ifyou’ve been reporting a serious problem — ‘Oh, Ididn't know that. I’ll look into it right away’.”The same priest continues, “The Bishop triesto see as many people as possible, to win them over.At the anniversary Masses for people who have beenmarried 25 or 35 years, he’ll take the time to personallygreet every person. When he goes to Confirmations,he anoints the students, and talks to every one. He’ll make comments to the boys like, ‘Oh, you havesuch big shoulders; you must work out,’ or he’ll tellthe girls how pretty they are.”A Fantasy WorldWhile Bishop Hubbard wins many withkindness, he has shown his temper at times. One priest reported that when a lawyer inAlbany went to the Bishop to complain about the goings-onat a certain rectory, where he saw a numberof priests in various stages of undress chasing eachother, the Bishop tartly replied, “What a priest doeson his own time is up to him.”There are priests and people who unhesitatinglyview Bishop Hubbard as a “charlatan,” one whomasquerades behind an expression of piety while hedestroys the Church. These Catholics see their Bishop not only asambitious (upon his designation as Bishop of Albany,Hubbard allegedly told some priests he would only bethere a short time, since he would be assigned toWashington, D. C., after Cardinal Baum went toRome) but also extremely protective of his image as aleader of the Church, of the future. In the words of another critic, “Bishop Hubbardlives in this fantasy world with himself as the‘boy bishop’ who is a great leader. But that image islong gone. He still lives in this world of image, andthat is why he becomes so vindictive when anyonespoils that image.“The reality is that the Bishop has excommunicatedhimself and he knows it, and if enoughpeople learn the truth of the situation here, he’ll justleave. His ego depends on so much approval.”Survival InstinctsIt is often stated that a bishop’s chancery is areflection or an extension of the bishop’s personality, carrying out his vision under his direction.A key to Bishop Hubbard’s personality issaid to be revealed by looking at the major personalitieswho work with him in leading the Diocese of Albany.A key figure is Vicar General Fr. MichaelFarano, for many years chancellor of the Diocese.Described as “more Machiavellian than Machiavelli,”he is regarded as “the Bishop’s hatchet man.”“The Bishop plays the good guy and he letsFarano be the bad guy,” said one priest, echoing theviews of every other priest and layman contacted forthis series. While “Farano does the dirty work so that theBishop’s image as a kind and gentle leader will not betarnished,” Farano wins praise from many for his“instincts as a survivor.”“If we got an orthodox bishop in here tomorrow,”said one Concerned Catholic, “Fr. Faranowould be there in his cassock.” Viewed as “extremelyambitious,” Farano craves the Bishop’s miter, and hehas just received his first assignment as a parishpriest, so that he can have the necessary pastoral experiencea candidate for the episcopacy must have. The judicial vicar is Fr. Anthony Diacetes, agraduate of the North American College, a formerpresident of the American Canon Law Society, whoonce announced at a public gathering that he wantedto be a bishop. Diacetes is a friend of Fr. MichaelPlace, Joseph Cardinal Bernardin’s theological consultant, and the reputed author of the rejected documentThe Many Faces of AIDS. The two, Diacetesand Place, are known to vacation together.Diacetes was described by his brother priestsas “extremely effeminate,” and The Wanderer wastold by several different sources a story concerningDiacetes and Chancellor Fr. Randall Patterson. One day Fr. Diacetes showed a picture of anaked Fr. Patterson to persons who worked in the pastoralcenter. Diacetes boasted that he showed thephoto to the Bishop and that Hubbard “thought it was65
