Doyle was told that hisname had often been the subject of conversations, andthere was an interesting bit of information The Wandererwould like him to verify.Members of the Coalition of ConcernedCatholics told this reporter that Fr. Doyle hadachieved the highest score ever attained on the NewYork State Bar Exam. Was that true?Fr. Doyle responded that he had scored in thetop 99.9 percentile, but that he thought there mighthave been others who have scored higher. The Wanderer assured Fr. Doyle that otherinformation it had was equally accurate. .Part VThe Breakdown Of The Liturgy“We have liturgical abuses here they haven’teven thought of in other places” — A Catholic layman“Every liturgical norm is violated in this Diocesewith efficiency and intent” — A Catholic priest. The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conceptionin Albany is separated from the New York Governor’sMansion by a parking lot; it is dwarfed by themassive tombstone-like towers of Nelson Rockefeller’sstate office buildings.Built in the middle of the last century, thecathedral has been beautified by successive Bishopsof the Diocese, and contains notable examples ofchurch art. The Stations of the Cross, a gift of BishopThomas A. Burke in 1898, won first prize at the ParisExposition. The pulpit, carved with figures of Christand several saints, was made in Holland. The stainedglasswindows are extraordinarily vivid and detailed, especially the north and south transept windows: oneis a “Lady window,” made in England; the othershows dramatic scenes of the Last Judgment.Albany Catholics believe it was a great disappointmentto Bishop Hubbard that the cathedral didnot crumble during the massive earth-moving andconstruction project of the Albany Mall. The visitorto the cathedral today notices the sad condition ofneglect that the cathedral is suffering. Even the pricelesswindows are deteriorating in their frames. The visitor to the cathedral might stop in fornoon Mass, celebrated by Msgr. Jack Jones, rector ofthe cathedral for as long as anyone can remember. Before the Second Vatican Council, onepriest remembers, he was a stickler for details, concernedthat every gesture and action was performedexactly as rubrics required.“But just as the cathedral is a shadow of itsformer glory,” said the priest, “so Msgr. Jones’ Massbears only the slightest resemblance to a CatholicMass.”“How We Feel”The Mass at the cathedral this reporter attendedwas videotaped by a member of the Coalitionof Concerned Catholics, in the event this descriptionof Mass should be challenged. Almost every rubricwas violated, and every abuse noted for correction bylnaestimabile Donum was allowed or performed.About 50 Catholics, including six from theCoalition of Concerned Catholics, attended the Massheld in the chapel, formerly the sacristy or cloakroom. The altar used was once a pedestal for a statue in thecathedral, and around it on three sides stood the people.Msgr. Jones wore no chasuble, but over hisalb he wore a long red and green knit Christmas scarf. The homily was given seated, and its theme(for the curious) was that “it’s not what we do thatcounts, but how we feel.” The bread and wine wereoffered together; there was no lavabo or Orate, Fratres. After the Holy, Holy, Holy, there was no approvedEucharistic Prayer, and the words of Consecrationwere made up.There was no hanc igitur, no epiklesis; theHost was broken during the words of institution; everyonesang the Per ipsum; the prayers after the OurFather were invented and bore no resemblance to theauthorized prayers; during the Lamb of God, littlebaskets containing Hosts were passed through theassembly and each person who wanted to receiveCommunion took one Host. Before the Ecce AgnusDei, the priest left the altar to collect the baskets, andthen people and priest self-communicated at the sametime. After consuming the Host, the people processedto the altar to sip from one of four glass goblets,42

We cannot believe Rome is not doing anythingabout this.”He told of a priest who addressed his congregationbefore Mass started, saying, “How many peoplebelieve that what we’re going to do today willbring God out of Heaven?”There was a show of hands, the man reported, and the priest replied, “Well, it’s not going to happen.”After that incident, people stopped going toMasses that priest was scheduled to celebrate, andwhen the parish stopped printing the times of theMasses he would celebrate, people called up, becausethey didn’t want to go to his Masses. When the parishwouldn’t give out that information, people juststopped going to Mass,” the layman said.“I told a Cardinal in Rome about this incident,”the layman continued, “and he just sat therewith an expression of unbelievable horror on his face.‘How can he say Mass?’ the Cardinal asked me.“I said, ‘It’s simple. His whole reason forbeing a priest is to destroy faith’.”This layman, who asked that his name bewithheld, said, “Please don’t use my name. If theBishop found out I spoke with you, he’d destroy me.It’s not funny. This is the kind of fear people have inthis Diocese.”Contrary To Church RulesOne woman who is not afraid to use hername in this series of articles is Joanne Clough, amother of nine who prays before the Blessed Sacramenttwo or three hours every day in reparation forthe sacrileges committed in the Diocese.A self-professed “roaming Catholic” sinceher own parish became too intolerable for her to bear, she is worried about the number of invalid Masses.“There are so many parishes where the altarbreads — cakes — are invalid and contrary to Churchrules. But an even more grave problem is that in anincreasing number of parishes, priests no longer saythe words of Consecration during Mass,” she said.“One time I went to Mass — it was MartinLuther Day, and the priest gave a homily praisingMartin Luther. He left out the words of Consecration.I went back to the sacristy after Mass was over, holdingthe bread, and I asked him if this was consecrated. He just grabbed it and ate it and never answered me.“I wrote a letter to the Bishop, and he wrote aletter back and said he’d look into it. That priest wenton to have a nervous breakdown, but he’s back now,and has another parish.“I’ve talked to Betsy Rowe, a former nunwho runs the Office of Prayer and Worship (formerlythe Liturgy Office) and asked her several times forthe recipes the Diocese recommends for altar breads, because there is still so much experimentation goingon in so many parishes.”The use of invalid altar breads has been aproblem in the Albany Diocese since the InstallationMass of Bishop Hubbard in 1977; that Mass used invalidaltar breads. That fact caused such an uproar in the Diocesethat the scandal even broke into the secularnewspapers, and was debated in letters-to-the-editorfor some time after. The bread at the Installation Mass contained,in addition to wheat flour and water, honey and bakingsoda, as admitted by the late Mary Reed Newland, then a staff member of the Albany Diocese Office ofReligious Education. Her defense in a secular newspaper of the43
