Next is a lifeof Christ from the psychological approach with anemphasis on spirituality.“After that,” continued Crewell, “will be abook on what the author calls restructuring theChurch.”In 1983, Fr. Girzone was quoted by TheSchenectady Gazette, asking why Jews and Catholicscan’t belong to each other’s congregations.“Nowhere in the Gospels does it show thatJesus ever intended to start a new religion or breakwith Judaism.”According to the Gazette, “Girzone suggestedthat the current pluralism in the Catholic Churchwhich includes Catholics as communicant memberswho disagree with Catholic teachings, such as birthcontrol, abortion, Papal infallibility, could also beextended to involve non-Catholics who embrace onlysome Catholic teachings. . . .“The priest charged that the upper-level authoritiesof the various denominations and religionsby their ‘superficial’ concern for doctrinal ‘purity’were impeding the promising ecumenical movementof their less doctrinally conscious members.”52

Robert Hollman was thespokesman for the group, as it tried to alert Catholicsin Albany that creation spirituality was based on disbeliefin original sin and, subsequently, Catholics didn’tneed a Redeemer.Hollman told reporters creation spiritualitywas being investigated by the Vatican. Then-Chancellor Fr. Michael Farano retorted, “Because it’sunder study by Rome, they are saying it is guilty untilproven innocent.” He added that the coalition is being“rather simplistic by judging something of this naturethrough broad strokes of condemnation.“Maybe the works are under study by Rome,”added Farano, “but it’s up to Church authorities todecide. The responsibility for permitting this or notpermitting this does not lie with Hollman.”A few weeks later, the Albany Diocese respondedto the coalition’s appearance with a publicstatement published on the front page of The Evangelistwhich stated: “No authorization has been given forthe formation of a new, official apostolate entitled theCoalition of Concerned Catholics in the Albany Diocese.. .(and) the Bishop’s office will not respond tomatters brought to its attention by the coalition, ascoalition, because it does not enjoy the mandate of the53
