Sanderling was born toJewish parents in 1912 in Arys, East Prussia (now Orzysz in Poland). He beganhis career as assistant conductor at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. In 1936, hefled to the Soviet Union and assisted George Sebastian at the Moscow RadioSymphony Orchestra. He later joined Yevgeny Mravinsky as joint PrincipalConductor of the Leningrad Philharmonic, a post he held from 1942 to 1960.He then returned to East Germany and raised the Berlin Symphony Orchestraand took charge of the Dresden Staatskapelle in 1960.In 1977, Sanderling left the Berlin Symphony and started guest conductingvarious orchestras abroad. The Los Angeles Philharmonic invited him to betheir Permanent Conductor, a post Sanderling turned down. Instead, he joinedthe Philharmonia Orchestra in London and was appointed their ConductorEmeritus in 1996. At the Philharmonia, he recorded the complete Beethovensymphonies and piano concertos. Sanderling was known for his interpretationon Brahms, Sibelius, and Russian composers’ works. His personal friendshipwith Shostakovich made him a sensitive interpretor of his compositions.Sanderling was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE)in 2002.元 老 指 揮 珊 特 齡 去 世Milan’s La Scala Opera House announced that worldrenownedconductor Daniel Barenboim will serve asits new Music Director. Barenboim, who is also LaScala’s Principal Guest Conductor and holds the titleof ‘Maestro of La Scala’, is responsible for producingat least two operas a year. With this new appointment,he will spend 15 weeks a year at the opera house andhe will open the 2011-12 season with Mozart’s DonGiovanni.La Scala’s former Music Director, Riccardo Muti,stepped down after serving the post for 20 years in2005, due to a dispute over artistic differences with themanagement.
