What I thought was: finally he’s here!Bill has written several sets of his beloved Christmas Medley for us,which has never failed to bring the spirit in Radio 4’s Christmas Concertin the Park to its height. As the project producer, I frequently writeto him to discuss the content and musical style of the new medley.Sometimes, apart from discussing his arrangement work, we divergeinto other kinds of news: cold wind is shrieking across the whitecappedsea outside his house, a rarely-seen red squirrel appearedin the field, the dog hasn’t spoken to him after an argument… Bill’sfriendly tone almost makes me forget the fact that we have neveractually met.The robust man with a big smile on his face is Bill, and he’s a reallynice and interesting person to talk with. We planned to have dinnerin a Cantonese restaurant nearby, but he could not wait to show methe 2011 Christmas Medley he’s working on . This year’s concert willbe built around some of the most popular music by Mozart. Bill’scomposition is also written in a Mozartian flavour – sweet and livelyChristmas songs come out one by one, then a theme from Mozart’sconcerto slips in and later a tune from a Mozart opera pops up. Whata witty piece and the audience will have a wonderful time movingbetween Mozart and Connor.入 秋 時 , 收 到 作 曲 家 康 納 (Bill Connor) 從 英 國 傳 來 的 電 郵 , 說 他 1過 香 港 , 想 相 約 見 見 面 。 我 心 想 , 這 位 「 紙 上 人 物 」 終 於 現 身 了 。康 納 在 過 往 六 年 為 聖 誕 園 林 音 樂 會 編 寫 的 聖 誕 套 曲 , 總 能 帶 起 全 場 高 潮 。 作為 節 目 監 製 , 我 最 近 不 時 透 過 電 郵 跟 他 討 論 全 新 一 首 套 曲 的 內 容 與 風 格 , 預備 在 今 年 12 月 24 日 上 演 。 康 納 會 順 帶 告 訴 我 屋 外 的 大 海 在 寒 風 中 翻 起 白 頭浪 、 一 隻 紅 松 鼠 難 得 登 門 造 訪 、 狗 兒 正 對 他 不 瞅 不 睬 …… 康 納 親 切 的 語 調 ,令 我 完 全 忘 記 他 是 生 活 在 地 球 的 另 一 面 、 與 我 素 未 謀 面 的 外 國 人 。眼 前 面 色 紅 潤 、 笑 容 滿 面 的 康 納 確 實 是 健 談 有 趣 的 人 。 原 本 約 好 要 到 附 近 的粵 菜 館 共 膳 , 他 卻 急 不 及 待 向 我 展 示 尚 在 創 作 中 的 聖 誕 套 曲 。 今 年 音 樂 會 主題 是 莫 扎 特 的 音 樂 , 而 康 納 亦 巧 妙 地 將 莫 扎 特 的 動 人 樂 章 , 融 入 連 串 輕 快 活潑 的 聖 誕 歌 之 中 ─ 這 邊 廂 有 莫 扎 特 的 某 首 協 奏 曲 主 題 , 那 邊 廂 又 冒 出 莫 扎特 的 歌 劇 調 子 ─ 簡 直 驚 喜 連 連 , 令 我 拍 案 叫 絕 。此 刻 , 康 納 仍 未 決 定 樂 曲 怎 樣 完 結 : 用 蹦 蹦 跳 的 《 紅 鼻 子 馴 鹿 魯 道 夫 》 還 是感 人 的 《 白 色 聖 誕 》 呢 ? 待 你 在 平 安 夜 參 與 聖 誕 園 林 音 樂 會 時 自 有 分 曉 。At this moment, Bill has not decided on how to end the medley: shouldit be the bouncy ‘Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer’ or the moving ‘TheWhite Christmas’?
