A feasibility study prepared for the Black Box TrustNovember 2011Executive SummaryBackgroundThe Black Box Trust was formed in 2004 as a voluntary organisation with the aim of creating adynamic <strong>and</strong> flexible performance space in Belfast City‟s Cathedral Quarter to build audiencesin the area until the arrival of the proposed Metropolitan Arts Centre (MAC).The Black Box opened in April 2006, operating from rented premises on Hill Street, at the heartof the Cathedral Quarter. Since then, the venue has provided space for a diverse range ofartistic programming, including live music, theatre, literature, comedy, film, visual art, live art,circus <strong>and</strong> cabaret, attracting over 30,000 people each year.Oxford Economics were commissioned by the Black Box Trust in September 2011 to undertakea feasibility study into the future operation of the venue as a cultural <strong>and</strong> artistic events space inco-existence with the opening of the MAC.Strategic contextThe future operation of the Black Box is set within the context of the current public sectorfunding environment, published strategies of key stakeholders <strong>and</strong> other relevant arts, culture<strong>and</strong> regeneration policies.The operation of the Black Box as an arts <strong>and</strong> culture performance space has contributed tomany of the key objectives of the strategies its funders - ACNI, BCC <strong>and</strong> DSD. It has improvedrecognition of the benefits arising from artistic events <strong>and</strong> performance spaces; it has contributedto the existing arts infrastructure in the Cathedral Quarter; exp<strong>and</strong>ed the range of opportunitiesfor people to enjoy <strong>and</strong> participate in the arts; played a role in tourism in the City; <strong>and</strong> improvedsocial cohesion during regeneration of the Northside of the City.Assessment of need <strong>and</strong> dem<strong>and</strong>For the purposes of the feasibility report, the assessment of need <strong>and</strong> dem<strong>and</strong> has beenconsidered under the following headings:Audience performanceAudience diversityLinks with local businessEngagement with Festivals <strong>and</strong> PromotersThe Metropolitan Arts Centre (The MAC)Winning the Fate Award for „Best Newcomer‟ in 2007, the Black Box has attracted almost193,000 people to the variety of events <strong>and</strong> activities it offers throughout each year since itopened its doors.i
