In his most recent works,Boyce starts by shooting video of a rotatingthree-dimensional, hand carved object.He t hen builds compositions in thecomputer by partially reconstructing theobject with 3D animation and analoguevideo over the original footage.Ultimately mixing layers of mediation assculptural texture, this process amplifiesthe contrasts between the grain ofanalogue video and the super clean,digital look of CGI and calls attention to thesurface of the screen itself. Shownon industrial LCD screens and mounted tomonochromatically related steel frames,these objects in the round becomeflattened on the screen but assume a newdimensionality through the sculpturaldisplay.Nate Boyce looks back at the role ofabstraction in early video art and exploresthe absence of dialogue it had withmodernist painting and sculpture.He conflates sculpture and video to createcompositions that live at the intersection ofthe two mediums, and relate more directlyto the critical history of painting andsculpture than the narrative tradition of filmand video. His work actively probes theideas originally posited by 1960’s Structuralistfilmmakers, as he investigates formalideas around Futurist and Cubist sculpture,late modernist painting, public art,and more recent experiments in stagedphotography and new technology basedpractices.
