LISTE 18 marks Leo Gabin’sfirst presentation in Switzerland and DavidOstrowski’s first-ever in Basel.Leo Gabin (Lieven Deconinck, GaëtanBegerem and Robin De Vooght) all live andwork in Ghent, Belgium and have workedas a collective since the early 2000’s usingmedia such as video, painting, drawing andsculpture. Leo Gabin take inspiration fromthe proliferation of user generated mediaon the internet and the until now undefinedspace straddling the public and privaterealms. Gabin’s work is not necessarily tobe viewed as critical of popular or youthculture, rather their work highlights aspectsof contemporary culture such as theprevalence of technology and it’s impact onconceptions of privacypainting? As an conceptual painter,Cologne based David Ostrowski has beenwrestling with these questions sincetudying at the Düsseldorf Kunstakadamieunder Albert Ohlen. Larry David’s Seinfelddefined a cultural acceptance of awkwardsilence, failure, and embarrassment andon the one hand, Ostrowski’s paintingsrespond to this cultural shift. For example,Ostrowski often ‘frames’ his paintingswith a marking in order to indicate theircompletion and through this mechanism,otherwise failed works are completed.On the other hand Ostrowski displaces anytrace of figuration by allowing only rough,primitive markings of highly abstractedwomen’s feet, an obsession of his, to creepinto his paintings.142 / 143How does one know when a paintingis finished?
