They look like lists ofingredients. The calculations are madeby compiling existing measurements fromdistrict plans or architectural drawings;when this information is not available,structures are surveyed directlyand buildings logged systematically.‘Charming for the Revolution’ recreatesthe ‘housewife’ as an ambiguous figure withan open future. This video installationof Pauline Boudry/Renate Lorenz winksat Jack Smith, the New York undergroundperformer and filmmaker from the 60’s tothe 80’s, as well as to the history of queerand feminist calls such as wages forhousework! Additional references extendfrom Deleuze-Guattari’s becoming-animal,to Pasolini’s ironic-capitalism critical film‘The Hawks and the Sparrows’.Falke Pisano exhibits new work in whichshe investigates humor, using cartoons asher material. Humor is an area which shehas examined before, for instance in‘Repetition and Dispersion/4 jokes become5 jokes (economy)’, 2011. Through repetition,she lets the jokes in her sculpture fallapart. They are stripped from their originalcontext, and only the underlying structureof humor remains. Revealing structuresthrough repetition is an important aspect inthe oeuvre of Falke Pisano.The paintings of Evi Vingerling mightseem abstract, but they actually refer to theworld around us. By unraveling whatshe sees, stripping the context and paintingit as it is, she discloses the hiddenbeauty of the ordinary. In her own words,she rids the object of its symbolic andhistorical meaning. The result looks almosteffortless, and above all very pure.

Cement, wood preserver andwax are sloshed onto canvases along withsmaller paintings or book like appendages.Coins, pins pebbles, fishing tackle andhalf a boiled egg are among the small objectsdropped into resin-filled rubber gloves,plastic bags or bottles, becoming fixedfor perpetuity in the piss colored sticky clodsthat crown her sculptures.It’s the casual accidents and ephemeralminutiae of our world – the stains and thescraps – that assume focus in Eichwald’scompositions. With titles such as ‘Sehnsuchtnacho Abstraktion’, ‘Antu-fun und denbeginn des endlichen Lebens (Desire forAbstraction, Anti-fun and the beginningof Finite Life, 2011)’ or the more earthly‘MILF’, Eichwald’s work has as much humoras beauty.As an artist and a writer, Eichwald was aprotagonist of the Cologne art sceneduring the 1990s before she moved to Berlin,where she currently lives and works.(Future Greats 2012: Michaela Eichwald,Selected by Michelle Cotton, Art Review,Issue.66, March 2013)Michaela Eichwald was awarded the2012 Prix Lafayette followed by a soloexhibition at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris,2013.
