InterviewwithGyörgy MosonyiThe strategic period 2006-2010 ended last year. Howdo you evaluate group achievements in the field ofsustainability? The performance of recent years can be considered successfulbecause in September 2010 MOL was listed on the DowJones Sustainability World Index, which is based on thebest-acknowledged sustainability assessments in the world. Moreover, we not only managed to be listed but we received ahigh rating in all three dimensions of sustainable development;long-term economic, environmental and social criteria. But thisoutcome is also supported by the several awards we receivedin previous years. However, the growth of the Group createsnewer challenges: our aim is that every company and businessdivision of the continuously developing MOL Group willmanage environmental and social issues at the same high level. What are the issues you will put special emphasison? The above-mentioned six focus areas cover theseissues. In our industry, occupational health andsafety, the protection of the natural environmentand the prevention of unexpected events andincidents take utmost priority. This is why wehave set strict and challenging targets in worksafety and that is also the reason we have madeHSE leadership training compulsory for everynewly-appointed manager. Another area is regulardialogue with stakeholders, which is importantnot only because of rising social expectations, but because it will play an increasingly importantrole in the international operations of the comingyears. But I should also mention the most essentialcontributors to the success of the company: we canachieve our goals only with the help of properlytrained, motivated and engaged employees. Andmore valuable human capital contributes also tosocial progress in general.GyörgyMosonyiGroup ChiefExecutive Officer,Chairman of theSustainableDevelopmentCommitteeWhat are the new directions for the next period from asustainable development point of view? Our principle, that sustainability is the basis for businessoperations and not a ‘greenwashing’ PR exercise or simplecharity, has not changed. For the years ahead we havedefined our objectives as being in the following six focusareas: climate change, environment, health and safety, communities, human capital and economic sustainability.Every business and functional area contributes to theefforts necessary to reach our targets, and they are validin all countries. But, for an oil and gas company, climate change is anunavoidable issue. Does MOL have any ideas aboutwhat kind of business model it will follow in the lowcarboneconomy? We are aware of the importance of the topic, whichis why we created a climate change statement forMOL Group in 2009. Moreover, my colleaguesfrom strategic development have prepared a verythorough and detailed study about the potential risksand opportunities MOL may face due to the transitionto a low-carbon economy. As a result, in the nextdecade we aim to enter into the power generationbusiness, construct geothermal energy-based powerplants, and, in line with EU objectives, continuethe development of more efficient and sustainablebiofuels. And energy efficiency will remain a focus. How do you evaluate performancein 2010 in the light of sustainabilityobjectives? If I look only at the figures, thenjust like with our financial data, last year was successful: ourenvironmental targets were mainlymet, employee engagement hasfurther increased, the satisfactionof our customers remained at a highlevel, we successfully supportedsocial programs and we made fairprogress towards our sustainabilityproject related goals. But on the otherhand, the incident rate could not bemaintained at its good low level ofprevious years, and unfortunately, fatal incidents also occurred, which is unacceptable.MOL became a truly international player in theoil and gas industry. What challenges does thisbring? The values of the Group are common, thereforethe commitment of our mother company towards anumber of international initiatives - such as the UnitedNations Global Compact – are valid for all membersof the Group. And although is easy to formulatethese words, it can take long years to extend andimplement these policies, systems, processes andcorporate culture, which represent these values, to allunits. Fortunately, regular external acknowledgments- like the recent ‘Gold Class’ ranking from SAM forsustainability – give us feedback that we are on theright track.Sustainability176 MOL Group annual report 2010 177
