Gloves, boots, apron and eye protection must be used whenneutralising an extensive corrosive spill. Respiratory protection isrequired if the liquid releases corrosive vapour or gas; Pour the required neutralising or adsorbing material around theperimeter of the spill, and then carefully add water and moreneutralising material to the contained area. Carefully agitate topromote neutralisation; Use pH paper to verify that all contaminated areas are neutralisedand safe to wipe up; If an adsorbent (e.g. spill control pillows) material is used insteadof a neutraliser, scoop up the absorbed spill, place it in a plasticbag, seal it, and then place in a labelled box. If neutralisedmaterial contains no toxic heavy metals (e.g. chromium), flushdown the drain with plenty of water.• Corrosive solids: Small spills can be cleaned up mechanically with adustpan and brush. Larger spills should be cleaned up using a HighEfficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter vacuum. For spills containingfine dusts, an air-purifying respirator with dust filters is recommended,as are gloves, protective goggles, and a laboratory coat.• Toxic solids: Avoid disturbing such solids (e.g. asbestos) which mayrelease toxic dust. Wet the material thoroughly, then place it in aplastic bag and label it appropriately. If wet removal is not possible, avacuum equipped with a HEPA filter is required.• Gases: In the event of the release of a corrosive gas (e.g. chlorine) orgases that are absorbed through the skin (e.g. hydrogen cyanide), acomplete chemical resistant suit and a self-contained breathingapparatus are required. There are no practical means of absorbing orneutralising a gas - the leak must be corrected at the source.• Mercury: If a small amount of mercury is spilled (e.g. brokenthermometer), use an aspirator bulb or a mercury sponge to pick updroplets, place the mercury in a container, cover with water, seal it,and label the bottle appropriately. To clean up the residualmicro-droplets that may have worked into cracks and otherhard-to-clean areas, sprinkle sulphur powder or other commerciallyavailable product for mercury decontamination. Leave the material forseveral hours and sweep up solid into a plastic bag, seal it and label itappropriately. Contact the appropriate organisation for monitoring of50
mercury air concentrations. If a large spill of mercury is involved, thearea should be closed off, and a mercury respirator worn during theclean-up. Fire and gas safety• Fire Safety: Laboratory fires can be caused by Bunsen burners,runaway chemical reactions, electrical heating units, failure ofunattended or defective equipment, or overloaded electrical circuits.Laboratory personnel should familiarise themselves with the operationof the fire extinguishers and the location of pull stations, emergencyexits and evacuation routes in their workplaces. In the event that thegeneral alarm is sounded, use the evacuation routes established foryour area and follow the instructions of the evacuation monitors. Onceoutside the building, move away from the doors to enable others toexit.Fire cannot occur without an ignition source, fuel and an oxidisingatmosphere (usually air), the three elements that comprise what is calledthe “fire triangle” shown here.51
