WAYFINDING AND GEOCACHING USING GPS<br />

GPS stands for Global Position<strong>in</strong>g System. A GPS receiver<br />

uses satellites to determ<strong>in</strong>e your location. GPS is used <strong>in</strong><br />

geocach<strong>in</strong>g, a treasure-hunt<strong>in</strong>g activity. GPS receivers can<br />

be signed out at <strong>the</strong> front desk at no cost. Use <strong>the</strong> GPS<br />

receiver to f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> clues for <strong>the</strong> Robert Bateman Natural<br />

Treasures <strong>Program</strong> or f<strong>in</strong>d publically placed geocaches near<br />

<strong>the</strong> John Janzen Nature Centre. Visit geocach<strong>in</strong>g.com to<br />

f<strong>in</strong>d a geocache near you<br />

ADVENTURE BACKPACKS<br />

Choose from one <strong>of</strong> three backpacks that conta<strong>in</strong> a variety<br />

<strong>of</strong> fun and educational self-guided activities that families<br />

can take part <strong>in</strong> at <strong>the</strong> John Janzen Nature Centre.<br />

• Animals and Plants Backpack<br />

• Birdwatch<strong>in</strong>g Backpack<br />

• Pond Exploration Backpack<br />

Adventure Backpacks can be signed out at <strong>the</strong> front desk<br />

at no cost, but visitors will be required to provide some<br />

personal <strong>in</strong>formation on <strong>the</strong> sign-out sheet.<br />

EXHIBIT ROOM: SEASONAL CHANGES<br />

Explore all four seasons <strong>in</strong> one room! Discover how<br />

<strong>Edmonton</strong>’s chang<strong>in</strong>g seasons affect <strong>the</strong> animals liv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> our city. This display features many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> animals we<br />

see regularly <strong>in</strong> our neighbourhoods and river valley, and<br />

provides a variety <strong>of</strong> hands-on activities for all ages.<br />

HONEYBEE HIVE<br />

Watch bees, busy at work, <strong>in</strong> our <strong>in</strong>door/outdoor work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

beehive exhibit located <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> new Tegler Discovery Zone<br />

(discovery zone is a sock only area).<br />

LIVE WILDLIFE EXHIBITS<br />

Small local wildlife such as salamanders, garter snakes,<br />

frogs, and toads are on display <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Exhibit Room.<br />

NATURE WALKS<br />

Enjoy a self-guided hike on four kilometers <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terpretive<br />

nature trails through some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g<br />

river valley scenery <strong>in</strong> <strong>Edmonton</strong>.<br />
