Oskar Karlsson, Petter PolsonMaster Thesis 2011 at Chalmers University of TechnologyDiscussionproduct presentation, but this would put the sense ofexcellence, efficiency and innovation in jeopardy. The cost for the outdoor concept can vary a lot dependingon how large the island is and what kind of attractor thatis put on it. The island can be constructed on floatingpontoons and the design can be more simplistic tokeep the price down, as long as it is a good attractorthat catches the attention of the people outside thecentre. The augmented reality allows a lot of innovativefeatures without any extra cost (except for the softwaredevelopment).6.3.2 Case studies and productsAs motivated earlier, what cases and solutions to presentin the smart grid exhibition has not been defined. Siemensis a very large company and smart grid is a quite widetopic which means that there are a lot of projects that canbe considered for display. When finding an interestingSiemens project, this can be described on the developedtemplate and complemented by e.g. movie clips andinterviews with participants. After finding a case, theSiemens products that were provided should be includedin the solution display and linked to the case.6.3.3 Software developmentSince there are lots of digital, interactive installationsin the concepts, there is much software developmentthat needs to be done. Especially the SimGrid game willtake a lot of concept development and testing before itcan be finalised and put into use. The object recognitiontechnology must work with the software to get thecomplete simulation experience. The game idea must alsobe defined before the programmers can start workingwith the software development.6.4 ConclusionIn this project, the three-fold scope was fulfilled andpresented in both text and visualisations. A temporaryexhibition platform was developed, together with asuggestion on a location in the Urban SustainabilityCentre, suitable to host the temporary exhibitions. The concept was made flexible so that the informationcontent of the exhibition can be changed to fit any topic. As a complement to the temporary exhibition platformconcept, to be used as a guideline when designing anexhibition, a document with strategies for successfulcommunication was developed. An exhibition concept on the topic of smart grid wasproduced regarding both the information contentabout smart grid and exhibition design solutions tocommunicate the message to the right target audience. The exhibition concept was made to fit the temporaryexhibition platform and can be used to presentand motivate why a temporary exhibition is a goodcomplement to the permanent exhibition in the UrbanSustainability Centre.Besides the temporary exhibition concept, an idea for anoutdoor exhibit was developed. This exhibit makes use ofthe water area outside the centre, targets the broad public, and aims is to make people interested in sustainabletechnology and the Urban Sustainability Centre. In all parts of the project, a product development processwas applied and numerous methods and tools were used. The installations in the exhibition focus on interactionand visitor participation to increase user engagement. The project has a clear sustainability perspective andthe smart grid exhibition will help the visitors to see thenecessity of a sustainable development and what role asmart grid will play in the future.69
