2.5 Upon return, the Teacher will be placed on the appropriate step of the salary scheduleas though such Teacher had not been on leave.2.6 Requests for sabbatical leave must be received by the Superintendent in writing insuch form as may be required by the Superintendent no later than March 31 of the year precedingthe leave.2.7 The Board shall respond in writing to requests for sabbatical leaves no later than May31 of the year preceding the leave.SECTION 3 Serious Illness or Death in Family3.1 For each death in the <strong>Teacher's</strong> immediate family (parent, gr<strong>and</strong>parent, sibling,spouse, child, parent-in-law, brother <strong>and</strong>/or sister-in-law <strong>and</strong> life partner) a Teacher may beabsent for up to five (5) normal work days without loss of regular pay.3.2 For serious illness of a member of the <strong>Teacher's</strong> immediate family for whom theTeacher has custodial responsibility, a Teacher may be absent for up to ten (10) normal workdays without loss of regular pay, after which said absences shall be charged to accumulated sickleave. This does not apply to minor illness of a family member.3.3 In cases of death of a <strong>Teacher's</strong> relative not in the <strong>Teacher's</strong> immediate family or theserious illness of a member of the <strong>Teacher's</strong> immediate family for whom the Teacher does nothave custodial responsibility, up to two (2) days' absence may be granted at the discretion of theSuperintendent.SECTION 4 Personal Business4.1 Each Teacher shall be allowed up to a maximum of three (3) days off per yearwithout loss of pay for the purpose of conducting personal business which cannot be conductedat a time other than when the Teacher is scheduled to be in school. These days may not beaccumulated from year to year.4.2 The "personal business" referred to herein may include such compelling events asreligious holidays, attendance at the <strong>Teacher's</strong> own graduation or the graduation of members ofhislher immediate family (as defmed in Section 3 hereof), attendance at hislher own wedding orthe wedding of a member of hislher immediate family (as defined in Section 3 hereof), legalbusiness that cannot be conducted outside of the normal work day the death or illness of a<strong>Teacher's</strong> relative not from <strong>Teacher's</strong> immediate family <strong>and</strong> for whom the Teacher does not havecustodial responsibility, or some other similarly compelling reason, but shall not includeextension of a vacation or holiday period, an accommodation of travel plans connected with avacation or holiday period, <strong>and</strong> shall not be taken the last ten (10) days of the school year or onconsecutive days unless special permission is granted by the Superintendent. Accordingly, thesedays shall not be used on the <strong>Teacher's</strong> last scheduled work day before or hislher first scheduledwork day after a vacation or holiday (except for single religious observations as to which theTeacher shall give prior notice, oral or written, to the building administrator) except under themost compelling circumstances, <strong>and</strong> then only with the approval of the Superintendent.
