The Space Shuttle Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU)As NASA changed from launching astronautson expendable rockets to the Space Shuttle systemwith its reusable orbiter and solid rocket boosters, spacesuit engineers began deve l o pment of areusable EMU. Previously, all spacesuits were onetimegarments. Spacesuits were custom-built toeach astronaut’s body size. In the Apollo program, for example, e a ch astronaut had three customsuits—one for flight, one for training, and one forflight backup. Shuttle suits, however, are tailoredfrom a stock of standard-size parts to fit astronautswith a wide range of measurements. In con s t ructing the Shuttle spacesuit, d eve l o p-ers were able to con c e n t rate all their designs tow a rda single function — going EVA . Suits from earl i e rmanned spaceflight pro g rams had to serve mu l t i p l ef u n c t i on s .
